Description Hal Morris 2011-12-09 03:25:27 UTC
Description of problem:

This is very weird; I was a UNIX (mostly kernel) debugger for 10 years, so please believe me.

Just installed F16, and after a while the m-key stopped working -- i.e. press the key and nothing happens. Only lower case m; "M" is fine. My first thought was the keyboard, so I switched it & still got the problem. I am working at first with the Gnome terminal emulator

I launched vncserver and did vncviewer from another system, and even HERE the "m" didn't work.

*NOW* I launch firefox and typing "m" in the URL field *DOES* work. So I type a URL containing an "m", and try to copy/paste it into a Gnome terminal command line, and everything but the "m" is copied.

Last, on the F16 system, I get a non-X console using Control-Alt-F4.

I *CAN* type "m" at the login prompt -- works find. But once I'm logged in, pressing the "m" key is again ignored.

*PREVIOUSLY* today, none of this was happenning. I know because I can remember I used "yum" a few times.

At some point between working and not working, I think the system had timed out and was prompting for a password, and the keyboard got up against something and so repeated entering some character hundreds of times.

I did a hard reboot with no effect also. Even unplugged it for a minute before rebooting.

Finally, reinstalling F16 *DID* fix the problem.

I doubt I can send you anything useful w.r.t. reproducing it, and I am now going to work around it by

IMPORTANT:

After reinstalling, I replicated the bug (accidentally) by adding

mode=vi; export mode

to /etc/inputrc

just before the line

$if mode=emacs

Replacing this with "set editing-mode vi"

got rid of the problem and gave me the result I wanted.

This (very odd :) bug seems more like a bash issue than Xfce's Terminal... or possibly gnome-terminal.

Moving to bash for comment.

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 17:13:25 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 21:40:30 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
