Description Rob Sanders 2011-12-09 20:16:25 UTC
Description of problem:
For Fedora 10-13 and RHEL6.0 I can change the login banner message by changing /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_text and /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_enable via gconf-editor or gconftool-2. Under RHEL6.1 this is not effective unless I also mark /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/wm_use_compiz to true.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
RHEL6.1, gdm-2.30.4-21.el6_0.1

How reproducible:
Everytime

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install GA OS with runlevel 5
2. Use gconf-editor to set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_text to "This is a test"
3. Use gconf-editor to set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_enable to true
4. restart X (init 3, then init 5, or a reboot)

Actual results:
Did not see "This is a test" displayed

Expected results:
Expected to see "This is a test"

Additional info:
If I set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/wm_use_compiz to true before step 4 then I see the expected text. I have not had to do this extra step in F10/11/12/13 or RHEL 6.0

Comment 2 Ray Strode [halfline] 2011-12-12 16:12:45 UTC
That sounds very strange.

If you toggle wm_use_compiz back off does it keep working from that point forward?

Comment 3 Rob Sanders 2011-12-12 20:04:13 UTC
Ray,
If I use gconf-editor to toggle wm_use_compiz on then I see the text. If I then toggle wm_use_compiz back off I *still* see the text after an init3/init5, but if I reboot then I loose the text again.
When I toggled wm_use_compiz off I removed it as a mandatory setting as well.
