Thanks for your feedback. I will remove this bug from the list of fixed bugs of the update then.

I wonder why you are the only one to have this problem. Is there anything special about your hardware?

Comment 10 Stuart D Gathman 2012-01-30 18:51:04 UTC
If I had to guess, it might be that in addition to typical Intel internal audio, there is a web cam and usb headphone device:

Comment 11 Raphael Groner 2012-01-30 20:05:44 UTC
I had a quick look into the source file alsa_backend.c: volumeicon seems to crash with the assertion mentioned in your backtrace, if there can no default channel be found for the (initial) configuration. Maybe, your configuration file is broken.

1) I guess there must be some problem with your alsa setup. Is it possible to adjust the volume by other mixer applications, e.g. alsamixer or pavucontrol?

2) Try to delete the configuration file in your home directory after volumeicon crashed or while you are logged out:

$ rm ~/.config/volumeicon/volumeicon

If you then login (run xfce4-panel and volumeicon) again, this file should be regenerated with valid default values without any crash.

3) I could imagine that volumeicon can not handle more than one sound device. Can you unplug the mentioned USB devices (especially headphone) and test with only the intel audio?

Comment 12 Raphael Groner 2012-01-30 20:17:13 UTC
Sorry, forget about "xfce4-panel". I did not see that you use Gnome.

Comment 13 Stuart D Gathman 2012-01-30 23:16:01 UTC
1) I have no problem adjusting volume of all devices using gnome-control-center sound, which is loaded by right clicking the sound icon (I don't know what program it is, volumeicon is not running). The sound icon adjusts the volume of the default output when clicking or rolling the mouse wheel.

2) Removing the configuration of volumeicon before logging in give no change. It did recreate the config before crashing.

3) Unplugging the USB headphone device before logging in avoids the crash.

Comment 14 Raphael Groner 2012-02-04 16:08:25 UTC
(In reply to comment #13)

> 3) Unplugging the USB headphone device before logging in avoids the crash.

Okay, then it's like I suspect: volumeicon isn't designed to handle more than one sound device in the same computer.

Unfortunately and as Christoph already said in comment #9, this bug depends on your hardware. So, it is very difficult to reproduce, also for upstream development and a possible patch.

Sorry that I can't tell you somthing new.

Comment 15 Stuart D Gathman 2012-02-06 17:24:05 UTC
Work around: "rpm -e volumeicon". I still get a volume control on the panel (supplied by /usr/libexec/pulse/gconf-helper I'm guessing).

Comment 16 Stuart D Gathman 2012-02-06 17:27:26 UTC
BTW, I can have a cheap (<$20) USB sound card shipped from Amazon to anyone who wants to work on this.

Jason,
this happens only with some special hardware setup, as it turned out. Do you use more than one sound device? Please look at the older comments - especially comment #9, comment #14 and comment #15 for possible solutions.

Well, this sounds more like a feature request to me. Cause I can not reproduce with any hardware that I own, I am out of this bug. Please consider to report it to upstream. :)

Comment 20 Stuart D Gathman 2012-02-15 19:52:41 UTC
It is one thing to not support multiple sound cards - pick the default and ignore the rest, or refuse to run - preferably with a dialog explaining why. It is another thing to *crash* when there are multiple sound cards.

It is *very* common to have an additional sound "card" (usually USB or bluetooth) for VOIP applications. So volumeicon is fairly useless for the 21st century. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be really needed.

longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

It still occurs on Fedora 17 Xfce Spin.

Comment 26 Wade Mealing 2012-08-30 03:47:08 UTC
Fedora 17.. and xfce 4.8 and ( self compiled ) 4.10.

ABRT continues to report and match to this BZ.. I'm going to re-open this. If there is a better mechanism please let me know.. Trying to make the best educated guess.

Comment 27 Wade Mealing 2012-08-30 03:52:23 UTC
volumeicon-0.4.6-1.fc17 , if that makes a difference.

Comment 28 Simon A. Erat 2012-09-30 13:02:42 UTC
Fresh installation (wiped all old data), "First boot"-thing, Login, Report.

backtrace_rating: 4
Package: volumeicon-0.4.6-1.fc17
OS Release: Fedora release 17 (Beefy Miracle)

Comment 29 Christoph Wickert 2012-10-25 13:14:02 UTC
Can all of you confirm they have more than one sound device or have anything like a headset plugged into an USB port?

Comment 30 Stuart D Gathman 2012-10-25 16:11:04 UTC
I already said so, but confirming again. And a workaround is to unplug USB audio before logging in - then you can plug it in again. A better workaround is to simply remove the volumeicon package.

Comment 31 Maciek Borzecki 2012-11-06 18:37:31 UTC
I can easily reproduce the problem on F17 by killing user's pulseaudio instance.

[maciek@galeon:~]$ ps -ef|grep pul
maciek 1498 1 0 19:25 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
maciek 2251 2197 0 19:29 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto pul
[maciek@galeon:~]$ kill 1498
[maciek@galeon:~]$ ps -ef|grep pul
maciek 2276 2197 0 19:29 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto pul
[maciek@galeon:~]$ volumeicon
ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

volumeicon: alsa_backend.c:86: asound_get_volume: Assertion `m_elem != ((void *)0)' failed.
zsh: abort (core dumped) volumeicon

Now, I'm not sure if that's true, but the reason might be due to the integration of ALSA and pulseaudio through alsa-plugins-pulseaudio and a fake 'pulse' card listed in ALSA's config.

Interestingly though, when I kill pulseaudio so that volumeicon aborts, starting alsamixer/amixer triggers pulseaudio's startup. Starting volumeicon has no such effect, pulseaudio does not get started automatically.

Comment 32 Josh Trutwin 2012-11-21 16:45:45 UTC
This is happening for me as well. It's a rather large nuisance as the gnome control-center volume icon will crash the X server if right clicking and going to preferences. I don't know of any other volume icons that can be added to the panel other than volumeicon and gnome-sound-applet.

Hardware is an HP 8200 elite small form factor. The base OS is Fedora 17 x86_64 with XFCE 4.10. There are no other sound cards installed, but there is a front and rear headphone / speaker jack, not sure if that'd matter.

Any additional information I can provide?

Suggestions for other volume control applets that don't crash?

Thanks, Josh

Try pnmixer.

Comment 34 Zoltan Hoppar 2013-01-20 07:35:41 UTC
I have noticed, that somehow it's crashing because it wants to start it earlier before the pulse mixer. I have played with seems this is the reason that implicates in crash. The app needs wait cycles till everything is loaded, then no problem at all.

Comment 35 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-04 06:40:47 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you

Comment 36 Fedora End Of Life 2013-08-01 18:16:17 UTC
Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
