Created attachment 549254 [details] an example file to test it on Description of problem: file -b --mime-type winmail.dat on a Fedora 16 gives: application/octet-stream but the same file on a Debian Lenny (file 4.26) gives: application/vnd.ms-tnef which is more correct. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): file-5.07-6.fc16.x86_64, Additional info: with file-5.00-1.fc16.x86_64.rpm file -b --mime-type ~/winmail.dat application/octet-stream with file-4.26-9.fc16.x86_64.rpm file -b --mime-type ~/winmail.dat application/vnd.ms-tnef so it is the jump of file-4.26 to file-5 I report bug upstream on: http://bugs.gw.com/view.php?id=158 but seems no one will reply .
I've attached the patch to mentioned upstream bug report and fixed in in Fedora rawhide. I plan to push new file-5.10 to F16 soon, so it will be fixed once I'll do that.

(In reply to comment #4) > file-5.11-1.fc18, for when in F16 ? , or just for F17 ? we got file detecting tnef correctly in F17 . Closing. Thanks,
