Description Stephane Konstantaropoulos 2011-12-23 08:15:58 UTC
Description of problem:

Fedora 16 Live CD does not fully boot on MacBook Pro Late 2011

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

16

How reproducible:

Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Put the CD in
2. Press the "option" key, select the CD to boot
3. Wait until it stops into dracut shell

Actual results:

Drop to dracut shell, cannot find disk by label "Fedora..."

Expected results:

Full boot into desktop.

Additional info:

The disk is just not there, neither by UUID or by label, there is no /dev/dvd or /dev/cdrom or /dev/sdb it looks like the CD drive is not recognized by the kernel. It' s a DVD-RW "SuperDrive"

Boot from USB never works, either with rEFIt and BIOS emulation or in EFI mode with the Mac boot loader.

I tried with both rEFIt and the Mac bootloader, same result. IT looks like something similar happens when booting from USB but then the display is broken and I cannot read the problem.

If there is no /dev/sr0, then dracut cannot do anything about it.

Comment 2 Stephane Konstantaropoulos 2012-01-05 12:14:03 UTC
It's not detected by the kernel for some reason, I installed it via the installer and anaconda downloaded all the packages from network as it could not see the dvd either.

Now in a running Fedora 16 environment, the cdrom is there. Perhaps a driver missing in the live kernel?

From my running kernel:

scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-8A8 HB14 PQ
: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 4.977996] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 4.978005] cdrom: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
[ 4.978267] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
[ 4.978486] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 5

kernel version 3.1.6-1.fc16.x86_64

We had another case of that on a sony laptop. Some jmicron module had to be loaded before the CDROM would get probed. Dracut didn't have that in the livecd initramfs, so it wouldn't work.

Can you provide the output of lsmod now that you have it installed?

Harald, this is likely going to wind up reassigned to dracut again to include whatever module is missing.
