Description Gerard Fernandes 2012-01-03 11:20:35 UTC
Description of problem: Java Applets do not work in browser on second-time access to the same page

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Installed Packages
Name : icedtea-web
Arch : x86_64
Version : 1.1.4
Release : 3.fc16

How reproducible: Always, on second time load of page.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Firefox
2. Go to http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
3. Notice the applet initialises and displays correctly.
4. Press Control-F5 to force reload
5. Notice that the applet initialises, but does not display anything.

Actual results: The Applet initialises, but does not display anything in the display area.

Expected results: The Applet should initialise and display correctly, as it does the first time.

Tests with other applets reveal that some applets fail to even initialise on second load. This is a big problem as in many corporate environments, Applets are used to provide access to Remote Desktop sessions.

In Fedora-17, even the standard Sun applet tester page doesn't load anymore:
https://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp

The version of Iced-Tea I'm running is:
IcedTea-Web Plugin (using IcedTea-Web 1.3 (fedora-1.fc17-x86_64))

Java version is:
[gerry@ajax ~]$ java -version
#java version "1.7.0_09-icedtea"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.3.3.fc17.1-x86_64)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.2-b09, mixed mode)

And is this "not working" for you also for other applets?
IcedTea-web have no problems to reload/load twice. But I have found http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp to be failing with with different (probably unrelated to IcedTea-web) exception.

Comment 3 Gerard Fernandes 2012-11-02 09:46:22 UTC
Well, I have tested the link (https://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp) in Windows on Firefox with Oracle JDK 7. And it works. So I would expect this link to work in IcedTea as well.

That it doesn't work, indicates to me that this is an IcedTea problem.

Apart from this, I also have problems with the HOBlink applet (http://www.hobsoft.com/products/secure_remote_access/JWT_Juniper_SA.jsp) which the company I work for uses to provide RDP access to work computers. This Applet _always_ fails to initialise for the last couple of IcedTea plugin versions (with the effect that I'm unable to work from home in Fedora - I am forced to dual-boot into Windows to log into work).

So it is definitely not restricted to the test applet.

And it most certainly is an IcedTea problem because none of these problems occur on the _same_ browser (Firefox) with the Oracle JDK.

The following:
>>And it most certainly is an IcedTea problem because none of these problems occur on the _same_ browser (Firefox) with the Oracle JDK.

should be read as:

And it most certainly is an IcedTea problem because none of these problems occur on the _same_ browser (Firefox) with the Oracle JDK on Windows.

I can confirm that above problems can (only can!) appear with jdk6, but I'm really not able to reproduce with jdk7

Will need some more investigations.

No longer reproducible with 1.4.pre
