Description David A. De Graaf 2012-01-03 22:26:12 UTC
Created attachment 550551 [details]
Postscript from groff formatted for Legal paper

Description of problem:
Postscript formatted for Legal paper is shifted up, with top lost.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

cups-1.4.8-5.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible:
Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create Postscript for legal size

2. Print it.
3. Notice shifted text.

Actual results: defective printing

Expected results: correct printing

Additional info:

The cups printing system has apparently forgotten how to observe the
Paper Size specification.

If PostScript, formatted for legal size paper, is sent to a logical
printer specified to use legal size paper, the printed text is shifted
up to where letter size paper would begin and the top is lost.

The attached PostScript file, addr.ps, was generated by groff and
illustrates the problem. Viewing this file with
    gsview addr.ps
shows five little pages, side-by-side, in landscape mode along the
14 inch page length. However, when printed, the text is shifted up
to where letter paper would begin, and the fifth little page is lost.

However, a test page sent to that logical printer prints correctly.

My laser printer is an older Minolta PageWorks 12, which implements
PCL5e (HP LaserJet 4+ compatible), so I use the driver "Generic PCL 5e
Printer Foomatic/ljet4". Using system-config-printer, I have defined two
logical printers: "minolta", which uses Letter paper from the default
feeder; and "legal", which uses Legal paper from the manual feeder.
To print on legal paper I send output to lpr -P legal with legal paper
loaded in the manual hopper. This scheme has always worked perfectly
in the past, but now fails.

The corresponding files in /etc/cups/ppd - minolta.ppd and legal.ppd -
differ in apparently correct ways, but these differences seem
ineffective.

This is with cups-1.4.8-5.fc15.x86_64.

Please attach the PPD you are using (from /etc/cups/ppd/) for the queue set to Legal size paper.

legal.pcl

Please print this file using this command line:

lp -oraw -dlegal legal.prn

What output do you get?

Comment 5 David A. De Graaf 2012-01-12 20:33:47 UTC
Well, the attachment's name was "legal.pcl", so I ran the command:
   lp -oraw -dlegal legal.prn

The printer output is a Printer Test Page that is correctly positioned on legal paper. The top border is 9/16 in below the paper top, the bottom is 7/16 above the bottom, and the side borders are 1/4 in from the paper edge. The text says:
Make and Model: Generic PCL 5e Printer Foomatic/ljet
    Media Dimensions: 8.50 x 14.00 inches
    Media Limits: 0.25 x 0.50 to 8.25 x 13.50 inches
    Driver Name: LJET4.PPD
    Driver Version: 1.1

In short, the output is perfect.
Now what?

Comment 6 David A. De Graaf 2012-01-12 20:43:58 UTC
What I MEANT to type was I ran the command:
    lp -oraw -dlegal legal.pcl

Comment 7 Tim Waugh 2012-01-13 12:17:24 UTC
Well, that was the result of doing this:

PPD=legal.ppd /usr/lib/cups/filter/bannertops 1 tim '' 1 '' < \
   /usr/share/cups/data/testprint > bannertops.ps
PPD=legal.ppd /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops 1 tim '' 1 '' < \
   bannertops.ps > pstops.ps
PPD=legal.ppd /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip 1 tim '' 1 '' < \
   pstops.ps > legal.pcl

In other words, running all the filters in order, using the legal.ppd PPD file. It *should* have been identical to you printing a test page locally.

So, if you print a test page locally, do you get the same result?

Comment 8 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 20:26:03 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 23:50:12 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
