PS file that reproduces the problem

Description of problem:

I recently upgraded to an HP Officejet 4500 Wireless from another HP all-in-one printer and for the most part, printing is working fine. However, printing from Flash Player no longer works. The print job appears in the queue but it is marked as "Stopped". The corresponding PS file in /var/spool/cups is viewable (and printable) with evince, but trying to print it with lpr causes the it to be marked as "Stopped". /var/log/messages reports:

Jan 12 12:15:15 gray hpcups[5011]: prnt/hpcups/HPCupsFilter.cpp 253: ERROR: Unsupported resolution
Jan 12 12:15:15 gray hp[5012]: prnt/backend/hp.c 833: ERROR: null print job total=0

I will attach the PS file and debug log from /var/log/cups/error_log.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

[brettle@gray ~]$ rpm -q hplip
hplip-3.11.10-5.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible:

Every time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. lpr UnsupportedResolution.ps

Actual results:
File not printed. Job in queue is marked as "Stopped".

Expected results:
File is printed.

Please attach the PPD for the queue, i.e. /etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4500_G510n-z.ppd.

Comment 5 Tim Waugh 2012-01-13 16:00:47 UTC
Thanks. I can reproduce the problem here.

The pstops output says:

[...]
DEBUG: %%BoundingBox: 0 0 612 792
DEBUG: There wasn't a %%Pages: comment in the header.
[...]

and the job gets a bad BoundingBox after pstops handles it:

[...]
%%Pages: 0
%%BoundingBox: 2147483647 2147483647 -2147483648 -2147483648
[...]

Note that the input file is not a DSC-conforming document, which may be the cause of the problem:

$ cupstestdsc UnsupportedRes.ps
UnsupportedRes.ps: FAIL
    Missing or bad %%Pages: comment.
        REF: Page 43, %%Pages:
    Missing or bad %%Page: comments.
        REF: Page 53, %%Page:
Warning: no %%EndComments comment in file.

Comment 7 Dean Brettle 2012-01-13 17:04:31 UTC
Thanks. Lack of DSC-conformance does appear to be the problem. When I add:

%%Pages: 1
%%EndComments
%%Page: 1 1

after the %%BoundingBox: line, it passes cupstestdsc and prints without a problem. So it appears to be a Flash player bug. You'd think if anyone could make a DSC conforming file it would be Adobe. :-)

Feel free to close this bug if you feel that adding a workaround is inappropriate.

Thanks again!

I've filed a bug at Adobe:

Comment 9 Tim Waugh 2012-01-16 16:34:32 UTC
Changing component to CUPS as the only unusual behaviour is from pstops.

Comment 10 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 19:09:15 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
