If I look at JBoss AS, all of the bin/*.sh scripts have ugo+x set, so I don't need to chmod the script in order to run them.   In IR5, the bin/*.sh scripts don't have the execute bit set, which is inconvenient.

 Here's a permissions listing of JBoss AS 4.2.2.GA :
