Description Paul DeStefano 2012-01-24 22:37:26 UTC
Description of problem:
Flash video does not play if page code checks version.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnash-0.8.9-5.fc16.x86_64
firefox 9.0.1

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to a site that checks flash player video (comedycentral, e.g., but preferably one that will report a version error.)

2. Error is either (a) version 10.x or newer required, or (b) you need to install Adobe flash and/or enable java script.

3.

Actual results:
Gnash works on youtube and adobe's page, but hardly anywhere else since everyone else stupidly insists on checking player versions in page code. Go to Adobe flash support page: www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/ . Step 1 (check flash Player version) shows null for both installed player version and OS. gnash will not even load on any page that enforces a version requirement. Few pages throw a useful error message in this case, either.

Expected results:
Go to Adobe flash support page: www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/
installed player version and OS should be something reasonable like LNX 10,1,999,0 or probably should be whatever is shown in Gnash Preferences under "Player version" so that such checks can be overridden.

Sorry, I meant always for pages that check/verify flash player *version*, not video.

Comment 2 Paul DeStefano 2012-01-29 22:22:27 UTC
Hmm, this may be specific to Firefox 9. I updated Firefox on a F15 system to Firefox 9.0.1 and it also exhibits this problem, but did not before (with FF8.x).

Comment 3 Paul DeStefano 2012-02-07 04:44:22 UTC
Any word on this? I'm sure it's not just me because it's happening on multiple systems.

This is not a small issue. It basically *only* works on youtube and the Adobe site. Sure, that's fortunate, but still...almost every other web-site checks version, which means flash video is practically broken in F16, even though gnash is capable.

Comment 4 Paul DeStefano 2012-02-10 18:03:40 UTC
I can confirm this is also still a problem with Firefox 10.

Comment 5 Paul DeStefano 2012-03-25 16:56:08 UTC
This problem continues with Firefox 11.

Comment 6 Paul DeStefano 2012-04-26 16:03:44 UTC
Problem continues with FF11 and gnash-0.8.10-2.fc16.x86_64. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Comment 7 Paul DeStefano 2012-05-25 03:37:23 UTC
Problem continues with FF12.

Comment 8 Paul DeStefano 2012-07-27 18:03:08 UTC
Problem continues with F17 and FF14.

Comment 9 Paul DeStefano 2012-08-14 16:57:13 UTC
Okay, now YouTube doesn't work either. I don't understand how this has lasted for 4 major Fedora releases and 6 major Firefox releases. Is there something I can do to assist?

Yes, please report the bug upstream.

Comment 11 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-03 22:36:25 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 12 Fedora End Of Life 2013-08-01 00:36:05 UTC
Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
