The crash seems pretty random.  I have seen it happen when I am not doing anything on the machine.

While gnome-settings daemon restarts, it screws up my environment,  I have a monitor above my laptop and setup both screens to work with this setup,  But when the new settings daemon starts, my laptop is black.  If I run gnome-control-center and look at the displays, it shows my laptop off to the right side rather then the bottom.  If I move the laptop screen to the bottom again, the laptop screen comes on and I can work again.

Occasionally the entire session goes to the sad whale.

I think the g_variant_unref problems are now all taken care of.
Please reopen if it is still crashing for you with current F17 packages.
