Description Dusan 2012-02-17 13:47:06 UTC
Description of problem:
In laptop ASUS NX90Jq B1 goes kernel-2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64.rpm - from e.g.

http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/slc6X/x86_64/yum/updates/repoview/letter_k.group.htm

works very well, but if I try to use kernel-2.6.32-220.4.1.el6.x86_64 or
kernel-2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.x86_64 immediately when uploading start, I see
"kernel-panic". This process goes with too high speed, and therefore I cannot
show you corresponding picture for monitor...

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible: yes, regular, if I try to upload 220.x.1, x=0,2,4 kernels.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual results: kernel-panic

Expected results:

Additional info:unfortunately I am not linux specialist, therefore my message is probably too short. Sorry...

Thank you for your help.

Regards,
              Dusan

Dusan,

Can you attach or cut-and-paste the output of the panic here?

Thanks,

P.

Hi Dusan,
This sounds like the same bug as mine on 64-bit 6.1:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=785958

Can you confirm you are using 6.0?
I was told to test 6.2 but have not done it yet.

Chris

Since RHEL 6.3 External Beta has begun, and this bug remains
unresolved, it has been rejected as it is not proposed as
exception or blocker.

Red Hat invites you to ask your support representative to
propose this request, if appropriate and relevant, in the
next release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Hi Dusan,

Sorry. I am not a developer.
What I meant is RedHat compared to other Linux I have tried is still using old(?) kernels.
Other linux are on kernel 3.

Will this problem ever get fixed?

Chris

Comment 11 Dusan 2012-05-15 05:21:39 UTC
Hi Chris,
up to now I am using SLC6 (RedHat). These kernels work properly:
kernel 2.6.32-131.0.15.el6.x86_64; 2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64;
2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64.
I never used other Linux, because for me SLC6 is important for my work (I am
elementary particle specialist and I am using software from SLC6/SLC5).

Unfortunately I do not understand what do you mean by the following sentences:
Other linux are on kernel 3.
Will this problem ever get fixed?

Hello,

I did try to use kernel-2.6.32-220.17.1.el6.x86_64.rpm - the results is same.
After starting I see "Starting udev:" and after then immediately I have
kernel-panic.

Hi Dusan,

Still no luck in reproducing this here. I suggest you go back to the SL guys and report the bug there. AFAIK they rebuild the kernel with their own .config options so it is likely a problem with that kernel.

Dear experts,

I am very happy! Now I used the kernel: kernel-2.6.32-279.el6.x86_64.rpm
on my ASUS and ALL work!!!

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
                Dusan
