Description of problem:
machine discription:
lenovo w520 with graphics set in discrete mode

on closing the lid the machine tried to suspend (the moon led started flashing).
the external display however stayed on the black screen.
the power button led began blinking rapidly and the laptop fans started running at high speed.

machine didn't respond to ctrl-alt-bkspc or ctrl-alt-delete
had to hold down the power button to turn it off

i'm sure a system core dump would be helpful, but i only know how to set it up under solaris. not linux. what other information can i provide to assist diagnosis?

booted back to my f16 KDE install and attempted to recreate 3 times:

1st time: when lid closed, suspend seemed to work, but when i re-opened it all i got was a black screen with mouse pointer. able to move the mouse but couldn't see the KDE desktop or get a box prompting for password. tried ctrl-alt-backspace and it killed X cause the mouse disappeared but still unable to get a login. just black screen. couldn't ctrl-alt-Fx to get a console either. ctrl-alt-del didn't reboot the machine. HD and WiFi lights bliniking so i don't think the box was hung. had to hold down pwr button to power it off.

2nd time: suspend/resume worked fine

3rd time: got the same behavior as my initial comments when filing the bug:

it tried to suspend- moon LED started flashing, black screen on external display, power button LED blinking rapidly. this time, on the external display i could see the text:

101.492803 drm nouveau 0xD48B i2c wr fail: -6

a bugzilla search revealed bug 741140 which has the same string. not sure if this is related.

---
i booted into my f16 Gnome install and attempted to recreate this problem. since the behavior in Gnome of laptop lid shut when external display present is NOT to suspend i had to suspend via the shut down menu. i was able to complete 5 back to back suspend and resume cycles. i did observe the nouveau 0xD48B error on the external display and later saw it in the syslog, but the suspend/resume worked just fine each time.

both installs are completely up to date.

with today's update that brought the 3.2.7-1.fc16.x86_64 kernel i haven't experienced this problem in 5 or so suspend/resume cycles. hopefully it's been fixed in this new kernel.

Still working well with the new kernel? If so, can you please close the bug?
