Which gvfs version please? https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2012-2316/gvfs-1.11.4-1.fc17
gvfs-1.11.4-1.fc17.i686 However, looks like it somehow "magically" got fixed. Now removable devices are appearing in Nautilus, also dialog / pop-up is appearing in Gnome3 when new device connected.
There's no such thing as magic. I'm glad it works for you.
