Description of problem:

After >2 years of Kernel updates without a glitch on an older pentium VI notebook, with an ATI 9000 Radeon Mobility, the 2 last Kernel updates prevent me to log-in.

I am an end user with limited knowledge about the system, so it worries me a bit.

Kernel update 2.6.42.9-1.fc15.i686, see bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=803098:

- Black screen & error msg. on boot.
- after multiple re-boots, I could sporadically access the log-in window, but the USB keyboard, and USB mouse did not respond (no key input, no mouse movement).
- the keyboard of the notebook did not respond either.

Kernel update 2.6.42.9-2.fc15.i686

No black screen & error msg. on boot, but once I reach the log-in window:
- USB keyboard, USB mouse & notebook keyboard do not respond (no key input, no mouse movement). I cannot log-in. The system is inoperable and I need to cold shut-down the PC.

The only last Kernel good to date on my system is 2.6.42.7-1.fc15.i686.

I am using Fedora 15 LXDE.

What information can I provide?

Thank you.

Comment 3 Justin M. Forbes 2012-03-16 18:52:18 UTC
Is this still a problem with kernel-2.6.42.10-3.fc15 in updates-testing?

Comment 4 nomnex 2012-03-17 01:33:59 UTC
Justin, before to try it, can you confirm

/etc/yum.conf

installonly_limit=3 > installonly_limit=8 (or 0) will keep my last good kernel to date?

kernel-2.6.42.7-1.fc15.i686 is the third on the list, and it should be gone after the next update (with the default setting). if 2.6.42.10-3.fc15 does not solve my boot issue, I will be left without option this time.

in the event there more than simply editing "yum.conf", eg. protecting this kernel package from deletion, then, could you direct me before I try kernel-2.6.42.10-3.fc15 in updates-testing. Thanks in advance.

Kernel update 2.6.42.12-1.fc15.i686 fixed the issue. Thanks.
