Description Jaromir Hradilek 2012-04-06 14:29:08 UTC
Description of problem:
On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, there seems to be no manual page for javap or appletviewer. There are manual pages named javap-java-1.6.0-openjdk and appletviewer-java-1.6.0-openjdk, but having to type "man javap-java-1.6.0-openjdk" every time I need to access a man page is not very user-friendly.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel-1.6.0.0-1.25.1.10.6.el5_8

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install the latest version of the java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel package for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6:

   yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel

2. Try to view the manual page for javap or appletviewer:

   man javap
   man appletviewer

Actual results:
System reports that these manual pages do not exist:

   ~]$ man javap
   No manual entry for javap
   ~]$ man appletviewer
   No manual entry for appletviewer

Expected results:
The manual pages should be displayed.

Additional info:
On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, there are symbolic links to javap-java-1.6.0-openjdk(1) and appletviewer-java-1.6.0-openjdk(1) respectively, for example:

  ~]# file /usr/share/man/man1/javap.1.gz
  /usr/share/man/man1/javap.1.gz: symbolic link to `/etc/alternatives/javap.1.gz'
  ~]# file /etc/alternatives/javap.1.gz
  /etc/alternatives/javap.1.gz: symbolic link to `/usr/share/man/man1/javap-java-1.6.0-openjdk.1.gz'

I'm not able to reproduce
rhel5 + openjdk6
rhel6 + openjdk6/7 x icedtea-web

Lukas, can you check?

Comment 2 Lukáš Zachar 2012-04-12 11:07:02 UTC
I wasn't able to reproduced it as well.
Both on the fresh install / already installed system RHEL 5.8.

#rpm -q java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel
java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel-1.6.0.0-1.25.1.10.6.el5_8

Man pages work, symbolic links exist:
# readlink -f /usr/share/man/man1/javap.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/javap-java-1.6.0-openjdk.1.gz

# readlink -f /usr/share/man/man1/appletviewer.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/appletviewer-java-1.6.0-openjdk.1.gz
