Description Donald Cohen 2012-05-06 02:29:53 EDT
I don't really know what component to blame, but I currently cannot get
to graphical ui.
All was working - last booted on Apr 25 to 3.3.2-6.fc16.i686
Since then here is the yum.log:

I then rebooted (to new kernel) and found myself not in the UI, and in fact
I don't even see a login prompt. I thought this might be related to having a printer connected to usb, so I removed that and also tried rebooting back to the previous kernel, but no improvement.

However, I do have access to the machine by ssh.
Which is how I gathered the data above.
I hope the following transcript is informative:

The attempts to start graphical target hang until I type ^C
Given that the multi user target seems to have worked above I don't understand why it was not already active.
The complaints about terminal are cause I'm running this in an emacs shell.
Below is what I find in /var/log/messages after my login:

May 6 01:37:03 cmc-db systemd-logind[920]: New session 1 of user root.

What does "systemctl list-jobs" say?
Comment 2 Donald Cohen 2012-05-06 03:02:29 EDT
I've rebooted to the new kernel in single mode, then tried to start various things. I'm up to multi user and can now ssh in as other users.
I've also started getty but I still see no login prompt.

What does your rc.local script do? It seems stuck.
Comment 4 Donald Cohen 2012-05-06 03:20:39 EDT
I noticed this -- and now that I've fixed it (by adding & to the last line) the reboot works!
Thank you very much.
However, I suggest that completion of rc.local NOT be required in order to finish other things, like bringing up the UI.
Basically rc.local should be started as a separate process.

I'd agree with you, but then we'll have other users complaining that they can no longer rely on rc.local being done before the login appears.

There's no pleasing everyone with rc.local. I recommend not using it at all and instead creating a custom service unit with ordering dependencies as necessary.
Comment 6 Donald Cohen 2012-05-06 12:59:55 EDT
I now finally see where these other services declare their dependency on rc.local. What's the justification for this dependency? Is this supposed to be an accurate simulation of the boot process before systemd? I had no idea that rc,local in previous OS versions had to finish before anything else could be done.
Comment 7 Donald Cohen 2012-05-06 18:09:41 EDT
I'm afraid my problems are not all solved after all.
When I login to the GUI I don't have a visible mouse pointer.
I don't know enough about the GUI to use it without the mouse.
Below is what appears in /var/log/messages starting from when I try to login.
