1) Go to Dashboard 2) change portlet height (by dragging) for one of the portlets in the left column. 3) change left column width by dragging the center notice that the portlet did not resize to fit the new column width. if increased we see dead space, if decreased we get a scroll bar.
Workarounds: Changing the portlet height again will fix the width, or just revisit the dash.
