Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 827327
virsh dumpxml machinetype shows incorrect value
Last modified: 2012-06-01 09:55:44 EDT
Description of problem:
machine type field of virsh dumpxml shows incorrect values. It doesn't show the OS type of the guest . How do i get the OS type of the guest ?
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Steps to Reproduce:
1.virsh dumpxml <guestvm>
<domain type='kvm' id='37'>
<type arch='x86_64' machine='rhel6.1.0'>hvm</type>
The machine type field is "rhel6.1.0" . It should be of the guest OS type .
Machine type has nothing to do with guest OS. It's just a name for the virtual hardware presented to the guest. In case of RHEL, the machine names correspond to the RHEL release where particular machine types were first introduced. In upstream world, the machine types are called pc-1.0.

Just the way a real, physical PC doesn't know what OS is running on it, neither does the virtual machine. It would be possible to query for this information with an agent running in the guest.
