Description Wendigo 2003-02-04 18:29:17 EST
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020830

Description of problem:
I have a DVD (MatshitaDVD-ROM SR-8585) as master and a CD-R/RW Samsung CD-R/RW
SW408B as a slave in the secondary IDE channel.

Everytime I insert a data CD in the CD-R/RW the computer freezes completely and
I have to reboot. When I insert a music CD I can play them normally.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Insert a data CD-ROM

Actual Results: Computer freezes/hangs

Expected Results: Nautilus should mount the CD

What IDE controller ?
Comment 2 Wendigo 2003-06-05 14:35:57 EDT
This was the original problem in RedHat 8 same thing happens in RH 9. A number
of people wrote me with the same problem. Apparently one of the solved it by
upgrading to kernel 2.24.21

I sent this to the linux kernel mail list a long time ago...

Mainboard is Intel D815EEA2

Comment 3 Wendigo 2003-06-05 14:45:08 EDT
Since I upgraded to RH9 the problem remains the same but now I get this message
at boot time:

status 0x51 Driveready seek error
Comment 4 Wendigo 2003-09-13 23:20:54 EDT
Lowell Miles (miles@cambr.uidaho.edu) solved the problem and sent me this:
-------------------------------------------
I noticed your message while I was trying to track down why my Samsung CD-R/RW
SW408B drive was crashing my linux system.

I have fixed this problem, on my system, by turning off DMA for the drive using
the following command:

hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc

I placed this command in /etc/rc.local so the DMA is turned off at boot time.

    Lowell

----------------------------------------

It works!!! Thanks Lowell
Comment 5 Alan Cox 2003-09-14 10:08:09 EDT
Re-opening since this drive wants adding to the PIIX4 "no DMA" lists
Comment 6 Wendigo 2004-03-28 17:19:39 EST
I located the manual of the drive. It says:

"Disable the DMA, as a mainboard with some Via Chip Sets may cause
problemes with comparability"

Yep, it seems it was badbly translated, but you get the point.
Oddly, my mainboard is full Intel.
Comment 7 Bugzilla owner 2004-09-30 11:40:29 EDT
Thanks for the bug report. However, Red Hat no longer maintains this version of
the product. Please upgrade to the latest version and open a new bug if the problem
persists.
