Description Kristofer Rye 2013-03-04 00:05:53 UTC
Description of problem:
Sound works fine with no headphones plugged in, or when in the GDM login menu, but when headphones are plugged in and user is logged in to any account on the system, sound is not played, even if sound is produced by the provided testing software (Sound Settings -> Test Speakers).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
I just updated to 3.8.1-205 kernel, first update today.

How reproducible:
Plug in headphones, test the sound, find that it does not work.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Plug in headphones
2. Log in
3. Try changing the volume.

OR

1. Plug in headphones
2. Log in
3. Try creating sound through any application.

Actual results:
No sound is produced

Expected results:
Unfragmented sound is produced

Additional info:
Default sound theme's sound is played when sound is changed on GDM, through the headphones. Headphones work perfectly with other sound-producing devices, but when the user is logged in, the sound does not work through the headphone jack.

Comment 1 Kristofer Rye 2013-03-04 03:45:11 UTC
NOTE: For all who come here later:

There was a command I ran to get this to work:

alsactl init 1

Which got the expected results. However, when unplugged and plugged back in, the headphones were not initialized correctly. This needs to be automated or reverted.

Reopening. This bug is possibly a pulseaudio bug (see below why), reassign if needed.

Accordign to my googling results, this problem (disappearing sound when headphones are connected) seems to be the result of "jack detection" thing somewhat recently added to sound in Linux.

My story is:
Lenove T520. Sound worked fine under Fedora 16, now under F18 sound works until I plug headphones in. Then it automagically muted: mute icons appear on Master and Speaker outputs in Audio Mixer. Unmuting them in the muxer has no effect - no sound is emitted.

If I unplug headphones, sound returns.

I ran pulseaudio -vv and exactly when I insert headphone jact, it spits out this:

Comment 3 Paweł Brodacki 2013-05-28 17:44:04 UTC
I hit this (at least the symptoms are identical) bug on Lenovo T410. It worked correctly, then suddenly there was no sound after inserting a jack into the headphones plug. The main suspect is the update of F18, xfce spin which I made on May 27, but I'm not sure.

Booting the previous kernel (3.8.11-200.fc18.x86_64) did not help. Following clues from Bug 914946 I added the following line:

options snd_hda_intel model=thinkpad

to /etc/modprobe.d/dist-alsa.conf and rebooted the system.

This helped.

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2013-12-21 15:24:59 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 18 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 18. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '18'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 18's end of life.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be
able to fix it before Fedora 18 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior to Fedora 18's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2014-02-05 23:04:48 UTC
Fedora 18 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2014-01-14. Fedora 18 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 6 Jan Horak 2015-08-24 12:39:06 UTC
Same issue seen on Fedora 22 and Lenovo T440s. The 'alsactl init 1' helps too.

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2016-07-19 18:57:34 UTC
Fedora 22 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-07-19. Fedora 22 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates.
