On x86_64, ld searches /usr/lib64 even when creating a 32bit binary, because the built-in elf_i386 ldscript contains SEARCH_DIR("/usr/lib64"). It is listed before the 32bit /usr/lib search dir, causing unnecessary "skipping incompatible ..." warnings during -m elf_i386 links that use libraries existing in both /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib. $ ld -m elf_i386 --verbose | grep SEARCH_DIR SEARCH_DIR("/usr/i386-redhat-linux/lib"); SEARCH_DIR("/usr/lib64"); SEARCH_DIR("/usr/local/lib"); SEARCH_DIR("/lib"); SEARCH_DIR("/usr/lib"); This isn't a problem with gcc -m32 because gcc effectively passes -L/usr/lib manually on the ld command line, thus all libs will be found before the ldscript SEARCH_DIRs need to be used. However, it's a problem for other users of ld that may want to rely on the built-in ldscript's default search directories.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 18 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 18. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '18'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 18's end of life. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 18 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 18's end of life. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
