/etc/amd.conf gets archived but not extracted when i switch between
different configurations.

Please upgrade to the version of linuxconf included in Raw Hide
(ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/rawhide/i386/RedHat/RPMS/), which may
already have solved your problem.
