Description Jared Deubel 2013-08-08 19:29:23 UTC
1. Proposed title of this feature request
Need Cloudforms to support remote syslog

2. Who is the customer behind the request?
Account: name (acct #)
TAM customer: no/yes
SRM customer: yes
Strategic: no

3. What is the nature and description of the request?
Our business case: We manage 200+ nodes and rely on centralized syslog to facilitate reviewing and monitoring logs.
4. Why does the customer need this? (List the business requirements here)
Without syslog integration, application and system logs for Cloudforms are distributed across multiple nodes, making troubleshooting and monitoring difficult.

Jared, can we get some more information around what the user is trying to do here?

Comment 3 Jared Deubel 2013-08-15 19:50:43 UTC
There user is trying to setup syslog so that all of the EVM/CloudForms logs get sent up to a central log repistory.

We are in the process of re-evaluating all RFEs, for the short-term, anything in unspecified is getting set to a low priority. In the coming weeks, these will all be reviewed and re-prioritized to something that closer reflects reality.

There is more involved in solving this RFE than simply configuring rsyslog on the MiQ appliance.
rsyslog can only be used to manage log messages under the control of syslog. Resolve this with
rsyslog would require updating the MiQ logging infrastructure to use syslog.

We are looking to have CFME log to journald, and use the systemd-journal-remote package to aggregate journald logs from all CFME appliances in one place (e.g. maybe a role on one of the appliances). Then we can use the systemd-journal-gateway service to access logs over an API which would allow them to be shown on the UI.
