pip version <=1.4 does not cleans up the build directory, it causes issues on upgrade. You can see the details here: https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/709 It is fixed in pip>=1.4 .
Also I like to point out that pip 1.3 does not work with git 1.8.3. For example installing a requirement from a git repo will cause a pip error. One example of that is described in http://mikeknoop.com/how-to-fix-latest-pipgit-incompatibility/
