This script containing the rsync has been run twice a day for the last several months. It started complaining just in the last few days. There were some additional messages from rsync that may be relevant:

rsync: xattrs.c:572: send_xattr_request: Assertion `f_out >= 0' failed.
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (26170 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(226) [sender=3.1.0pre1]

Not sure what to make of that.
