Description František Zatloukal 2024-04-11 10:43:12 UTC
1. Please describe the problem:

It seems nVidia RTX 3000 series GPUs don't work in Fedora 40 at all.

2. What is the Version-Release number of the kernel:

kernel-6.8.4-300.fc40.x86_64

3. Did it work previously in Fedora? If so, what kernel version did the issue
*first* appear? Old kernels are available for download at
   https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 :

4. Can you reproduce this issue? If so, please provide the steps to reproduce
   the issue below:

Boot Fedora 40 Final Candidate on a device with hybrid GPU configuration with RTX 3k series GPU.

5. Does this problem occur with the latest Rawhide kernel? To install the
Rawhide kernel, run ``sudo dnf install fedora-repos-rawhide`` followed by
   ``sudo dnf update --enablerepo=rawhide kernel``:

6. Are you running any modules that not shipped with directly Fedora's kernel?:

No

7. Please attach the kernel logs. You can get the complete kernel log
   for a boot with ``journalctl --no-hostname -k > dmesg.txt``. If the
issue occurred on a previous boot, use the journalctl ``-b`` flag.

3. Did it work previously in Fedora? If so, what kernel version did the issue
*first* appear? Old kernels are available for download at
   https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 :

According to a report at the test-list, the last working kernel was 6.8.1 kernel.

Comment 3 Justin M. Forbes 2024-04-11 13:07:44 UTC
It just started building, but mind giving https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=116223506 a try when it completes?

Comment 4 Jeremy Cline 2024-04-11 15:40:28 UTC
I booted RC 1.13 (6.8.4-300.fc40.x86_64) with an RTX 3060 and it worked okay, for what it's worth:

I did try that on the hybrid GPU machine, it doesn't stall the boot now, and seems to crash at a different place now:

Could it be happening only on hybrid systems?

I am, of course, not an expert, but it does seem to be failing to power on the the GPU, and the first crash looks to be it timing out during initialization. It might be on hybrid systems, or possibly more platform specific than that. I do think it's safe to say it's not all Ampere GPUs. It might be interesting to try and reproduce it on other laptops with hybrid graphics, I guess.

I haven't had any booting problems so far also I just booted the Workstation live image https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/40_RC-1.13/Workstation/x86_64/iso/Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-40-1.13.iso. Worked fine zero issues.

I tested the workstation 1.3 live image on two machines and both booted without issue: 3070 mobile and 3090 desktop

Comment 11 Adam Williamson 2024-04-11 18:57:20 UTC
Discussed in 2024-04-11 go/no-go meeting, acting as a blocker review meeting: https://meetbot-raw.fedoraproject.org/meeting_matrix_fedoraproject-org/2024-04-11/f40-final-go-no-go-meeting.2024-04-11-17.00.html . Rejected as a blocker on the basis that so far this really only seems to affect two hybrid laptops, they already didn't have perfect functionality with nouveau, and the bug doesn't prevent operation, just delays boot for two minutes. Accepted as a freeze exception issue as it would be nice to fix that two minute delay for the released lives.

dmesg output from live image with nouveau errors

I have a Lenovo X1 Gen 3 with hybrid graphics.

I have been booting Fedora 39 with kernel 6.8.4 without noticing a problem. I do usually boot it with the display closed and SSH into it after start, so it's possible I just haven't noticed an issue.

It seems by chance, on my first boot with the Fedora 40 RC 1.13 Live image I encountered a long delay at a black screen before the desktop appeared and noticed errors in dmesg.

It took almost a dozen restarts to reproduce the error. Most of the time my laptop appears to boot without delay and without error.

Comment 13 bitestring 2024-04-13 17:25:03 UTC
I encountered this bug on Kernel 6.8 (F39) and had to spend two days to fix the issue. This bug is also making Fedora 40 ISOs impossible to boot. A new user having no knowledge about Nouveau will have no idea why he/she can't start Fedora 40.

This bug not only makes two minutes of boot latency but also causes my Intel CPU to stay at 60C even nothing is running. Installing proprietary Nvidia drivers fixes both the slow boot time and high temperature issue. (Or enabling powertop works for some reason).

This is easily reproducible with F40 on Intel Integrated Graphics + Nvidia Dual GPU setup which is the most common setup.

Please consider this as release blocking bug and fix it.

Comment 14 Adam Williamson 2024-04-13 17:30:57 UTC
It's not easily reproducible, though. We've tried on lots of hybrid laptops and only hit the bug on a few of them. It's not something simple to identify and fix.

It would help to at least know what your laptop and GPU models are.

Comment 15 bitestring 2024-04-13 17:48:10 UTC
Hi Adam, I would be happy to help with any logs or information. I am running a Dell Inspiron 7591 laptop with

Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9880H
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

I don't need Nvidia proprietary drivers at all. In fact I never used Nvidia with proprietary driver installed. But just having this hardware on my laptop makes it impossible to install Fedora 40.

I did a clean re-install of F39 Silverblue and then used rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau modprobe.blacklist=nouveau kargs to disable the buggy driver and installed powertop to reduce CPU temperature.

Comment 16 Adam Williamson 2024-04-13 18:19:02 UTC
Can you also try with kernel kernel-6.8.5-301.fc40 ? that is supposed to mitigate the issue to some extent.

Comment 17 bitestring 2024-04-13 18:54:25 UTC
Looks like 6.8.5 fixed the issue. But it logs a different error now but I have no idea what could be the side effect of this. But atleast the boot time and timeout is no longer present.

Seeing a very similar stack and ooops point when plugging in a monitor (via USB-C hub) with Fedora 40 on 6.8.7-300. Externals show the other USB devices on the hub are working as expected but external monitor remains black and does not get woken up. Note - multiple CPUs report this error - I've just included CPU 7 as a reference.
