Description of problem:
kudzu's hardware detection seems to disturb old vortex nics. such a
nic (3Com Corporation 3c905 100BaseTX [Boomerang]) is unable to
transmit anything after kudzu ran:

disabling kudzu and rebooting solved the problem.
