Description:
Cap’n Proto is an insanely fast data interchange format
and capability-based RPC system. Think JSON, except binary.
Or think Protocol Buffers, except faster. In fact, in benchmarks,
Cap’n Proto is INFINITY TIMES faster than Protocol Buffers.

This supersedes bug#1040243.

Comment 2 Andy Lutomirski 2016-04-21 17:10:54 UTC
*** Bug 1040243 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

Comment 3 Andy Lutomirski 2016-04-21 17:45:00 UTC
This looks generally sensible.

Before I go run fedora-review on it and check all the boxes, why did you choose to name it capnproto instead of capnproto-c++?

Also, shouldn't README.txt be packaged, or was that removed upstream?

Comment 4 Neal Gompa 2016-04-22 01:15:06 UTC
@Andy:

I chose to name it capnproto for consistency with other distros that have it packaged, namely Debian[0] and Ubuntu[1], and the upstream project itself is named as such, even though the tarball is still capnproto-c++.

The README.txt file is in the tarball, but it merely provides instructions on how to build it from source, which is generally not useful for a pre-built package, so I elected to not include it.

Comment 5 Neal Gompa 2016-04-26 15:22:29 UTC
To be consistent with Debian packaging of capnproto, I've swapped things around so that the tools are the main package and libraries are in a subpackage.

Since a review hasn't started, I've just gone ahead and replaced the SPEC and SRPM.

Package Review
==============

Legend:
[x] = Pass, [!] = Fail, [-] = Not applicable, [?] = Not evaluated
[ ] = Manual review needed

One biggish issue: this installs unversioned .so files. More precisely, it installs nonstandard versioned .so files. They look like:

SONAME               libcapnp-0.5.3.so

This may be against the guidelines. It may also be fine. You could try
to convince me that it's fine, or you could ask FPC.

Issues:

[x]: Fully versioned dependency in subpackages if applicable.
     Note: No Requires: %{name}%{?_isa} = %{version}-%{release} in

===== EXTRA items =====

Generic:

     Note: Mock build failed
     See: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Guidelines#rpmlint

I think fedora-review is just confused.

[x]: Large data in /usr/share should live in a noarch subpackage if package
     is arched.

Comment 7 Neal Gompa 2016-04-27 02:52:16 UTC
So the version scheme is not unknown to Fedora. The scheme is commonly used by applications that try to enforce a consistent filename structure across platforms. The style of versioned library is the same used on Windows and Mac OS X. It's typically used in order to avoid libtool (which handles reformatting the structure of the library name depending on the platform), as some people seem to dislike it.

In Fedora, we have two important packages that actually use this format in their libraries: libdb (Berkeley DB) and llvm-libs (LLVM).

The key is that both unversioned and versioned variants of the library name exist (which they do), and that the unversioned one is in the devel subpackage (which it is). RPM's dependency generators handle this case pretty well, so I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.

Comment 8 Andy Lutomirski 2016-04-27 04:00:50 UTC
Fair enough. No complaints from me, then. The version system will clearly work in the sense that capnproto-libs updates will change the soname and rpm will notice.
