Description yzheng 2020-05-10 15:53:10 UTC
Description of problem:

Customer found that even disabled 'Screen Keyboard' in the 'Universal Access', the screen keyboard will come out after touching the screen.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

gnome-shell-3.28.3-10.el8.x86_64
kernel-4.18.0-80.el8.x86_64 or kernel-4.18.0-147.el8.x86_64

How reproducible:

Swiping across the screen.

Steps to Reproduce:

If Settings -> Universal Access -> Typing -> Screen Keyboard is set to 'off'

In RHEL 8.0
~~~
・'Editor' etc doesn't display the screen keyboard.
・Swiping across the lower half of the screen will display the screen keyboard.
~~~

In RHEL 8.1
~~~
・'Editor' etc displays the screen keyboard.
・Swiping across the lower half of the screen will display the screen keyboard.
~~~

Actual results:

Even disables 'Screen Keyboard' in the 'Universal Access', the screen keyboard will come out after touching the screen.

Expected results:

If disabled 'Screen Keyboard' in the 'Universal Access', the screen keyboard will not come out after touching the screen.

I FTR am working to backport upstream's touch-mode, I'll try to have mutter/gnome-shell scratch builds ready for testing in the coming days.

Thanks Tomas. We understand that engineering team takes priority to fix this bug in 8.4. Just want to highlight again that customer in case 02630496 requested fix on 8.1.

Regards,Judith

Here are the results from my testing.

Environment:
Lenovo x230t (commercial Wacom touchscreen convertible laptop)
RHEL-8.4.0-20210316.n.1
mutter-3.32.2-57.el8
gnome-shell-3.32.2-30.el8

Laptop in normal configuration with physical keyboard visible:
The OSK will not display itself without being switched on through the accessibility settings.

Laptop in tablet/touchscreen mode with screen rotated and closed over the physical keyboard.
The OSK will display itself when using the touchscreen on a text input box.

I also performed functional testing of the OSK itself. All features and functions work as expected (special characters, minimize/maximize, caps lock etc). Overall these changes made the OSK feel more polished.
