categories
Thanks a lot hugsie, Software looks much better with several categories. However, I can see some apps shown twice in the Recommended apps as you can see in the attached screenshot, can sometthing be done about it ? is it something on GS side rather than appstream data ?
> Did we include the patches suggested by kalev that I mentioned in the Comment 1 ?
Yes. :( Got a --verbose trace of gnome-software and we can see what's going on?

Even when I add flathub it looks empty.

Well, that's the answer, RHEL just doesn't have enough available applications available to show the categories. If you install epel do more apps show up?
I am strugling to get epel working with software, I have added the repo, I can search packaged via cmd: $ dnf provides lollypop Not root, Subscription Management repositories not updated This system is not registered to Red Hat Subscription Management. You can use subscription-manager to register. Last metadata expiration check: 0:03:44 ago on Thu 23 Jul 2020 10:21:07 AM CEST. lollypop-1.1.97.3-1.el8.noarch : Music player for GNOME Repo : epel Matched from: Provide : lollypop = 1.1.97.3-1.el8 lollypop-1.1.97.3-1.epel8.playground.noarch : Music player for GNOME Repo : epel-playground Matched from: Provide : lollypop = 1.1.97.3-1.epel8.playground I did multiple restarts of app, metadata were fetched but no apps from epel are shown in gnome-software, I noticed the following errors are populating the --verbose output: 08:26:16:0632 XbSilo ignoring invalid file /usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop:ctime=1592816810.302299:filename=/usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop: Error on line 1 char 1: Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>) 08:26:16:0632 XbSilo compiling /usr/share/applications/nm-connection-editor.desktop:ctime=1593520759.315010:filename=/usr/share/applications/nm-connection-editor.desktop… 08:26:16:0633 XbSilo ignoring invalid file /usr/share/applications/nm-connection-editor.desktop:ctime=1593520759.315010:filename=/usr/share/applications/nm-connection-editor.desktop: Error on line 1 char 1: Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>) 08:26:16:0633 XbSilo compiling /usr/share/applications/gnome-background-panel.desktop:ctime=1595234860.323204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-background-panel.desktop… 08:26:16:0633 XbSilo ignoring invalid file /usr/share/applications/gnome-background-panel.desktop:ctime=1595234860.323204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-background-panel.desktop: Error on line 1 char 1: Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>) 08:26:16:0633 XbSilo compiling /usr/share/applications/gnome-bluetooth-panel.desktop:ctime=1595234860.324204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-bluetooth-panel.desktop… 08:26:16:0634 XbSilo ignoring invalid file /usr/share/applications/gnome-bluetooth-panel.desktop:ctime=1595234860.324204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-bluetooth-panel.desktop: Error on line 1 char 1: Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>) 08:26:16:0634 XbSilo compiling /usr/share/applications/gnome-control-center.desktop:ctime=1595234860.326204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-control-center.desktop… 08:26:16:0634 XbSilo ignoring invalid file /usr/share/applications/gnome-control-center.desktop:ctime=1595234860.326204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-control-center.desktop: Error on line 1 char 1: Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>) 08:26:16:0634 XbSilo compiling /usr/share/applications/gnome-datetime-panel.desktop:ctime=1595234860.327204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-datetime-panel.desktop… 08:26:16:0634 XbSilo ignoring invalid file /usr/share/applications/gnome-datetime-panel.desktop:ctime=1595234860.327204:filename=/usr/share/applications/gnome-datetime-panel.desktop: Error on line 1 char 1: Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>) 08:26:16:0635 XbSilo compiling /usr/share/applications/nautilus-autorun-software.desktop:ctime=1593520722.246271:filename=/usr/share/applications/nautilus-autorun-software.desktop… 08:26:16:0635 XbSilo ignoring invalid file /usr/share/applications/nautilus-autorun-software.desktop:ctime=1593520722.246271:filename=/usr/share/applications/nautilus-autorun-software.desktop: Error on line 1 char 1: Document must begin with an element (e.g. <book>) are they related ? I also added the rpmfusion, I can see vlc within the repo, but cannot find in Software... I doublecheked on the other machine, I wonder how it happened I was focused more of flatpaks recently so I overlooked it. Richard, thanks for updating the appstream-data for epel, the epel apps are available after adding the repo out of the box in gnome-software. As I didn't know, the appstream data for rpm-fusion has to be installed separatelly through rpms. rpmfusion-free-appstream-data-8-1.el8.noarch rpmfusion-nonfree-appstream-data-8-1.el8.noarch Regarding the problems I mentioned with categories of popular apps not being shown, (Recent Releases, Editor's Picks, etc.), there are not enough applications marked for the mentioned categories in epel8 and appstream combined, therefore those sub-categories are hidden until you add e.g. flathub. Adding an rpm for convenience: appstream-data-8-20200724.el8.noarch Since the problem described in this bug report should be resolved in a recent advisory, it has been closed with a resolution of ERRATA.
