(In reply to comment #0) > Description of problem: > Is Wijesekera (keymap for sinhala) a duplicate functionality of Scim-sinhala? no. it's not. it's a different mapping mechanism. Tyronne, how different is it? & how much % of people use wijesekera in Sri Lanka? Can the letters being typed by wijesekera be typed in scim-sinhala? Which is the most commonly used keymapping? (In reply to comment #2) > Tyronne, how different is it? & how much % of people use wijesekera in Sri Lanka? it's 100% different. in the key mapping as well as the input mechanism. eg : to type SINHALA LETTER ALPAPRAANA KAYANNA in scim-sinhala, you have to type "k" but in wijesekara you have to type "l" > Can the letters being typed by wijesekera be typed in scim-sinhala? yes, "most" of the letters being typed with scim-sinhala can be typed in wijesekara >Which is the >most commonly used keymapping? both being used. the people who are switching from the manual "type writer" prefer to use wijesekara key map, for that's identical to the sinhala type writer. but most of the people who's been use computers for the word processing uses scim-sinhala. specially the IT related community. IMHO, we have to have them both to get the best. for both have been widely used. Q) just for a second, if we believe that wijesekera is not there, how would those using sinhala react? Would they miss anything which scim-sinhala cannot cover? A) yes.. for those who have used the manual type writer, find it difficult to work, unless wijesekara isn't there. for they have been used it for years.. Wijesekera keymap is a typewriter keymap - Such keymaps are different from normal keymaps as typewriters have half keys mapped to different keys (something like monospace). Hence this functionality cannot be fully duplicated in scim-sinhala, though some combinations can be replicated. Hence, after speaking to Tyronne (si_LK LM), I found that both wijesekera & scim-sinhala are necessary to support si_LK functionality wise. Therefore I'm closing this bug as of now, can be reopened for further discussion. |
