Description

Proposed as a Freeze Exception for 43-beta by Fedora user mtasaka using the blocker tracking app because: Installation must be completed flawlessly and (although anaconda does not crash or so) this behavior is very confusing This isn't actually an installer bug; it's a mistranslation. The English text *states the requirement*: "Passphrases must match". The Japanese translation instead *describes the case where the requirement is not met*: "パスフレーズが一致しません", "Passphrases do not match". So in English, you see a green check next to "Passphrases must match", which makes sense, right? "Passphrases must match" is the requirement, and it's met (green check). No problem. But in Japanese, it doesn't make sense. Interestingly, the *other* requirement on this page was correctly translated. In English, it's "The password must be at least six characters long." The translation is "パスワードは 6 文字以上でなければなりません", which does indeed correctly state the requirement - it doesn't say "The password is not six characters long", or anything like that. So to "fix this bug" we just need to correct the translation to something like: パスフレーズが一致しなければなりません I think? (Apologies for my terrible Japanese :>) +4 in https://pagure.io/fedora-qa/blocker-review/issue/1875 , marking accepted. Moving to anaconda-webui as that's actually where the offending string is. Thank you for explanation. So maybe the original translater 'assumed' that the phrase "Passphrases must match" 'implied' that actually password did not match? I think "パスワードは一致する必要があります" or so is the translation which is less misunderstanding (This sensense does not mention about whether passphrase is actually matching or not) I updated the translation for this string in Weblate, https://translate.fedoraproject.org/translate/anaconda-webui/anaconda-webui/ja/?checksum=5fa3de0246063cd1 The updated translation should be present with next anaconda-webui release. > So maybe the original translater 'assumed' that the phrase "Passphrases must match" 'implied' that actually password did not match? Yeah, that would be my guess too. > I think "パスワードは一致する必要があります" or so is the translation which is less misunderstanding Should we change the translation of "The password must be at least six characters long" also, then, to be a bit more consistent (use 必要があります)? Or is it fine as-is? That is, if we have these two translations for similar elements on the same page: パスワードは 6 文字以上でなければなりません パスワードは一致する必要があります does that read a bit weird to a native speaker? Or is it totally fine? Thanks! Well, I think "パスワードは 6 文字以上である必要があります" is more consistent, but (in my opinion) "パスワードは 6 文字以上でなければなりません" is acceptable as is. I tried https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=2808826 (anaconda says anaconda-webui-48-1.fc43) but the message still says "パスフレーズが一致しません" (passphrase mismatches). That build shows as "Tue, 26 Aug 2025 06:14:05 UTC" in Koji. The comment from Katerina was at 13:13 UTC on the same day. So I suspect the change didn't quite make it to that release? I did a release for Web UI https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2025-ae64c15f39 but I forgot to add a patch for this. Let's land this between Beta and Final the fix is there, but I suggest to not do an upstream release only for this. FEDORA-2025-6d0a06bb12 (anaconda-43.39-1.fc43 and anaconda-webui-50-1.fc43) has been submitted as an update to Fedora 43. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2025-6d0a06bb12 FEDORA-2025-6d0a06bb12 has been pushed to the Fedora 43 testing repository. Soon you'll be able to install the update with the following command: `sudo dnf upgrade --enablerepo=updates-testing --refresh --advisory=FEDORA-2025-6d0a06bb12` You can provide feedback for this update here: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2025-6d0a06bb12 See also https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Updates_Testing for more information on how to test updates. FEDORA-2025-6d0a06bb12 (anaconda-43.39-1.fc43 and anaconda-webui-50-1.fc43) has been pushed to the Fedora 43 stable repository. If problem still persists, please make note of it in this bug report. |
