Description Bas Mevissen 2025-10-03 20:20:34 UTC
See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2393850, same thing.
Both official Fedora kiCad and COPR F43 packages crash when starting the application. Only the launcher works.
FYI: Flatpak version also has some quirks with not responding to user input now and then.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Steven A. Falco 2025-10-03 20:44:04 UTC
So a python 3.14 rc got into F43 and broke KiCad. There is nothing I can do about that right now. Hopefully in a few months I'll be able to put a KiCad dev build into F43 and Rawhide.

Only options for users right now: a flatpak incorporating an older python version or staying with F42. I'll personally be choosing to stay on F42 until things settle down.

Comment 2 Steven A. Falco 2025-10-03 21:14:10 UTC
I've opened an issue with the upstream devs: https://gitlab.com/kicad/code/kicad/-/issues/21890

Please comment there with any technical details.

Comment 4 Steven A. Falco 2025-10-06 14:49:17 UTC
Victor Stinner (from the Python team) has determined what is going wrong.

Details here: https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/139653

Open kicad. Click on the button to open board editor. Crashes on opening board editor or schematic. Kicad was installed and worked on Fedora 42

Please install the testing fix for python:

sudo dnf upgrade --enablerepo=updates-testing --refresh --advisory=FEDORA-2025-e235793f10

Also, please leave positive karma if it works for you:

https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2025-e235793f10

It does work for me.

Comment 9 Bas Mevissen 2025-12-08 16:29:41 UTC
I can confirm it works for me too.
Thank you all who worked hard to get this issue resolved!

Comment 10 Bas Mevissen 2026-01-10 18:02:20 UTC
The Kicad packages currently provided as updates work fine. Also the 9.0.7 update which is now available as update is fine (see https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=2886465).
Thanks again for all the hard work. Bug can be closed now as being fixed.
