Description Adam Williamson (Red Hat non-Fedora) 2026-08-21 19:46:40 UTC
Since Fedora-Rawhide-20260805.n.0, the openQA fingerprint login test has been failing.

The test is set up according to the plan we worked out in https://forge.fedoraproject.org/quality/os-autoinst-distri-fedora/issues/223 . You can see it at https://forge.fedoraproject.org/quality/os-autoinst-distri-fedora/src/branch/main/tests/desktop_fprint.pm . We set up the systemd service, enroll a dummy fingerprint, reboot, run a command to trigger a 'fingerprint scan' in 20 seconds, then switch to GDM and expect, first, the "(or swipe finger across reader)" text to appear indicating that the fingerprint support is working, and then for the login to happen.

Up to Fedora-Rawhide-20260804.n.0 this was working reliably, but from Fedora-Rawhide-20260805.n.0 onwards, it has failed every day. When we go to gdm, the "(or swipe finger across reader)" text never appears. In the journal, there are quite a lot of messages from fprintd, several like this:

Aug 05 03:12:36 fedora fprintd[3117]: file_storage_discover_prints() for user 'root' in '/var/lib/fprint/root/virtual_device/0'
Aug 05 03:12:36 fedora fprintd[3117]: scan_dev_storedir(): opendir("/var/lib/fprint/root/virtual_device/0") failed: Error opening directory “/var/lib/fprint/root/virtual_device/0”: No such file or directory

I'll attach the full journal log.

I update the libfprint to the latest 1.94.100. Could you please run the test again with the previous libfprint 1.94.10.
If no issue was found, I'll try to update fprintd to the latest commits to see if the issue is resolved.

Well, the timeframes don't quite work, for that. The test started failing in Fedora-Rawhide-20260805.n.0 . You didn't update libfprint until 2026-08-11. So I don't think the version update can be the cause. I don't know what *is* the cause, though; I was hoping it'd be more obvious to a domain expert.
