Description Brandon Nielsen 2026-09-24 18:35:55 UTC
It is not possible to authenticate to an access point requiring a PSK via gnome-initial-setup.

Authentication works as expected when signed in with the newly created user.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora Workstation Live
2. Boot into installed system
3. At the select network step, choose a secured network
Actual Results:
No prompt for authentication appears, system does not associate with network.

Expected Results:
Prompt for authentication, system connects to selected network using the given authentication key.

Additional Information:
Observed with both 20260921.n.0 and 20260924.n.0 composes, though the behavior differs between the two. With 20260921.n.0 connection is not possible, even with the newly created user.

In both cases the smoking gun in the log appears to be "no secrets: No agents were available for this request."

If gnome-initial-setup uses portals, this might be a dupe of 2537341 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2537341).

Unsecured networks were not tested. WPA-Enterprise was not tested.

Comment 1 Fedora Blocker Bugs Application 2026-09-24 18:41:00 UTC
Proposed as a Blocker for 45-final by Fedora user nielsenb using the blocker tracking app because:

Network connection page of gnome-initial-setup does not withstand a basic functionality test. Violates the [first boot experience criteria](https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_45_Final_Release_Criteria#First_boot_experience).

Comment 2 Brandon Nielsen 2026-09-24 18:42:55 UTC
Forgot to note the network in question is secured with WPA2-Personal.

Can you use `coredumpctl gdb` or abrt to get a full backtrace?

Second backtrace from coredump generated at first boot

Apparently I have two coredumps, I have attached backtraces from each.

Discussed in 2026-09-28 blocker review meeting: https://meetbot-raw.fedoraproject.org//blocker-review_matrix_fedoraproject-org/2026-09-28/f45-blocker-review.2026-09-28-16.00.html . We decided to punt (delay the decision): this is certainly potentially a blocker if confirmed, but we want to have more folks test and confirm the problem and get more details.

*** Bug 2545852 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

Confirmed also on aarch64 / RPi4: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2545852

Note from the dupe: Jaroslav doesn't have any crashes in his journal. So the crashes are possibly unrelated. he does note this error in the logs:

Sep 29 00:02:10 fedora gnome-initial-setup[2022]: Trying to measure NMAWifiDialog 0xaaaac0a3caa0 for height of 337, but it needs at least 412

Brandon, do you see a similar error in yours?

Comment 12 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-05 17:36:43 UTC
A thought here: this may be because oo7-daemon is not running in the g-i-s session? We fixed making sure it runs in regular user sessions, but g-i-s runs in a special context, I think.

Comment 13 Kamil Paral (Fedora Quality) 2026-10-05 17:50:20 UTC
Discussed during a blocker review meeting [1]. The outcome was:

AcceptedBlocker (Final) - this is accepted as a violation of Final criterion "If an initial setup utility is run or intended to be run after the first boot of the installed system, then it must start successfully and each page or panel of the initial setup utility should withstand a basic functionality test". Wifi network activation during GNOME initial setup seems to fall under "basic functionality" to us, and three people have now confirmed this bug

I do not.

Comment 15 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-05 23:02:57 UTC
OK. So our working theory is that "no secrets: No agents were available for this request" is the key error, and it's caused by oo7-daemon not being present. All three reporters see that error, I don't think any other factor is in common with all three reporters.

Comment 16 Jaroslav Groman 2026-10-06 11:43:37 UTC
I tried to start oo7-daemon service manually in "gnome-initial-setup-2" user context and indeed
clicking on secured WiFi now correctly displayed "Authentication required" popup and I could
enter WiFi password just fine (at least on RPi4).

oo7-daemon service is initially loaded but inactive and disabled in that user context.

Comment 17 Jaroslav Groman 2026-10-06 12:34:29 UTC
Also tested enabling oo7-daemon globally before booting the RPi4 SD card:

➜ sudo systemctl --root=/run/media/jgroman/fedora/root --global enable oo7-daemon.service
[sudo] password for jgroman:
Created symlink '/run/media/jgroman/fedora/root/etc/systemd/user/default.target.wants/oo7-daemon.service' → '/usr/lib/systemd/user/oo7-daemon.service'.

This also fixed the issue.

Comment 18 Felipe Borges 2026-10-12 09:41:27 UTC
These changes in gnome-initial-setup make it explicitly request for the oo7-daemon to be started https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-initial-setup/-/commit/457a0e5d9925ff14f12b203d92bb21525d630bf6

I included it in the gnome-initial-setup 51.1 upstream release now in https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gnome-initial-setup/pull-request/16

I would appreciate if someone could test and confirm that the build fixes the issue in the gnome-initial-setup first session environment.

Comment 19 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-13 17:01:08 UTC
Moving to g-i-s, then, and setting POST. If we can get a build and update marked as fixing this bug ASAP, that'd be great.
