Description Susi Lehtola 2026-10-07 14:43:33 UTC
Running sympy on EPEL 10 leads to the following error

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python3.12/site-packages/sympy/__init__.py", line 23, in <module>
    import mpmath
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'mpmath'

During handling of the above exception, another exception occurred:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/wrk/lehtola/libxc/scripts/sympy2c/compile.py", line 36, in <module>
    import libxc_codegen  # noqa: E402
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  File "/wrk/lehtola/libxc/python/libxc_codegen.py", line 25, in <module>
    import sympy as sp
  File "/usr/lib/python3.12/site-packages/sympy/__init__.py", line 25, in <module>
    raise ImportError("SymPy now depends on mpmath as an external library. "

From the looks of it, the bug also exists on Fedora branches. One should add

Requires: python3-mpmath

to all branches.

Comment 1 Jerry James 2026-10-07 15:57:08 UTC
The Fedora builds of sympy do require mpmath:

$ dnf repoquery --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=rawhide --enablerepo=rawhide-source --requires python3-sympy
Updating and loading repositories:
 Fedora - Rawhide - Source                                                      100% |  31.7 KiB/s |   9.9 KiB |  00m00s
 Fedora - Rawhide - Developmental packages for the next Fedora release          100% |  77.4 KiB/s |  24.1 KiB |  00m00s
Repositories loaded.
/usr/bin/python3
python(abi) = 3.15
python3.15dist(mpmath) >= 1.1

The EPEL builds apparently removed that requirement on purpose:

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/sympy/blob/epel10.3/f/0001-pyproject.toml.patch

Perhaps @kkeithle can explain what is going on here?

Comment 2 Kaleb KEITHLEY 2026-10-07 17:22:13 UTC
Not much to explain. The epel build is a bootstrap[1] build, and mpmath didn't appear to be required to build sympy or any of its dependents, including, but not limited to libarrow/liborc and ceph. At the time it was built nobody else was using it except me, so...

The intention is/was to restore it for the non-bootstrap build.

Comment 3 Kaleb KEITHLEY 2026-10-07 17:31:59 UTC
Alternatively, since I did build python-mpmath in epel10 some time back, it's possible I overlooked the need to rebuild sympy with it.
