top, strace, gdb attach to the runaway process

Description of problem:
After leaving machine on overnight, fan is running on high, and top shows gnome-panel is winning.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-panel-2.24.3-1.fc10.x86_64
kernel-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-i810-2.5.0-4.fc10.x86_64
$ uname -a
Linux davidtnotebook 2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Jan 21 01:33:24 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

How reproducible:
Not clear what has caused this.

Steps to Reproduce: (possibly)
1. notebook pc with VGA out
2. xrandr --auto to attempt to turn on VGA
3. try again since it did not work
4. VGA comes on cloning inbuild panel of 1024x768
5. adjust display properties to say 1360x768 display
6. set display res to 1360, no clone
7. logout, backin
8. VGA now running 1360x768
9. xrandr --output LVDS --off
10. watch a dvd movie
11. xrandr --output LVDS --auto
12. close notebook screen
13. (sunday 4am housekeeping performed)

Actual results:
+ 8 hours, fan is running noisily
top shows gnome-panel has gone awol

Expected results:
machine should be idle, when idle.

Additional info:
$ uptime
 10:31:56 up 20:37,  3 users,  load average: 0.03, 0.09, 0.10
(with gdb having halted the process for now).
Sounds a lot like:

I can leave the machine in this state for another 20 hours or so, in case there is something that can be gleaned ?
