Update - after investigating further: * mplayer only freezes the computer when using SDL output - all other output methods I tried, including xv, x11, gl and gl2 work well. VLC also plays ok using the default video output method (I haven't tried to play with it). * When the computer freezes, the mouse cursor can still be moved - contrary to what I said earlier. * When the computer freezes, if I immediately try to SSH in I can get in, but if I wait half a minute I can only SSH in as root and I can no longer log in as my normal user (which uses remote authentication through winbind). * With the remote login nothing I try can bring back the local console - not even killing X and I have to reboot eventually. * Regarding the winbind login - I can't figure out what prevents me from logging in after X freezes: the ssh login session just get stuck after the password prompt, and I get this in the logs: ==> /var/log/secure <== May 5 22:13:27 chen sshd[2718]: debug1: userauth-request for user oded.a service ssh-connection method password May 5 22:13:27 chen sshd[2718]: debug1: attempt 2 failures 1 May 5 22:13:27 chen sshd[2716]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=dov.office.taboola.com user=oded.a May 5 22:13:27 chen sshd[2716]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): getting password (0x00000210) May 5 22:13:27 chen sshd[2716]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): pam_get_item returned a password ==> /var/log/messages <== May 5 22:14:46 chen winbindd[1528]: [2009/05/05 22:14:46, 0] winbindd/winbindd_dual.c:async_request_timeout_handler(186) May 5 22:14:46 chen winbindd[1528]: async_request_timeout_handler: child pid 1555 is not responding. Closing connection to it. ==> /var/log/samba/log.winbindd <== [2009/05/05 22:14:46, 0] winbindd/winbindd_dual.c:async_request_timeout_handler(186) async_request_timeout_handler: child pid 1555 is not responding. Closing connection to it. I have no idea how this is related to the X freeze, but this only happens when X freezes due to video trying to play. Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue. Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link below. We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information. Thanks in advance. Created attachment 345228 [details]
Xorg configuration file
Sorry for not getting back earlier - this is my workstation and while I'm at work I'm loath to getting it stuck on purpose.
Here is the Xorg conf file. Logs will follow shortly after I freeze X and log in from a different computer.

Xorg.0.log
When the freeze happens, I get this part dumped in Xorg.0.log (the full look is attached), but I'm not sure why - it doesn't list any error:
