Description of problem:
I can't give a root password when plymouth is enabled. After hitting each key I get a communicate about wrong password. Please see attached photo.

just to clarify, this is when something goes wrong during boot and the 'enter root password for maintenance' prompt is displayed.

reporter confirmed that with plymouth disabled, this works as expected, so it's plymouth-specific.
