Description Julian G 2010-02-21 00:44:18 UTC
Description of problem:
Server installation with Fedora DVD takes a long time for choosing a good minimal software set. Still I don't know if i would have some performance loss or improvements by (un)selecting some system related packages.

Using Debian netinstall CD I just unselect all categories and still have a functional server system and even without ssh daemon.

Actual results:
If I just uncheck all main categories essential software is missing.

Expected results:
Checkbox, button or something similar for doing a minimal server installation.

There shouldn't be any Laptop specify packages or NetworkManager but a good selection of packages which are needed on common multiprocessor hardware (irqbalance? microcode? numa? I don't know if any of these packages has an effect on system performance).

Which release is this? The task selection screen currently offers a minimal install checkbox at the bottom of the list, which provides a pretty stripped down install.

Comment 2 Julian G 2010-02-22 22:42:48 UTC
Just tested F12 DVD installation with "customize later" and unselected all 3 main categories (office, development, web server) -> 1074 packages (including x11, etc.)

Next try looks better, with "customize now" and unselected everything -> 200 packages

If this is already improved in F13, please close this bug.

Thanks
