Description of problem:
It sounds really weird but if you use ext4 as root partition (no lvms) gnome trash does not work. When file is deleted it just disappears. If you drag files to trash it is the same thing.

rhel 5.5

How reproducible:
Install rhel 5.5 system with ext4

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install system with ext4
2. delte something in gnome
3. 
  
Actual results:
files do not go into trash

Expected results:
files should go into trash
