Description Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-03 06:02:06 UTC
I just upgraded from f13 to f14. The kernel version of is 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64. When I boot the system, the computer hangs at:

Setting up hostname.

When I boot into 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64 everything seems to work just fine.

Comment 1 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-03 06:29:18 UTC
After watching the computer come up with the older kernel, I noticed that the next module to come up is LVM.... So the problem could be that the newer kernel is not loading the lvm module. Which means it could be initramfs problem.

Of course I'm no developer so take what I just said with a couple of grains of salt, but.... it kinda makes sense given that nothing else happens.

Thanks for your attention on this matter

Comment 2 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-03 08:29:36 UTC
Maybe to expedite.... This is the contents of my dmesg with the older kernel.... Of course.... I don't have one for the newer kernel

Comment 4 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-03 09:56:16 UTC
One last thing I can add... Is that I recreated the initramfs with dracut.... No joy.

Comment 5 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-04 14:48:04 UTC
K... I added acpi=off to the boot options and things seem to have come up just fine.

I think that this should still be considered a bug, because I did not have to to do this with Fedora 13 kernels.

Now I should have logs to be able to go through and as such I can provide any additional info that might be required.

Thanks for looking into this.

Currently trying various acpi kernel parameters

acpi=off
--------
get the computer running but of course there is no power management

acpi=noirq
----------
No joy

acpi=rsdt
---------
No Joy

acpi=copy_dsdt
--------------
Nope

This kinda sucks.... cause the computer is a laptop and power management is a good thing.

As mentioned previously..... I have had no trouble with F13 at all

Thanks for your attention on this matter

Just updated the bios from version 2.30 to 2.80

No Joy

Comment 9 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-08 06:29:21 UTC
Tried running kernel 2.6.35.6-50. Again... same results.

I guess I'm stuck with 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64 for the time being on an F14 system:(

Comment 10 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-08 09:58:16 UTC
As I final test..... I rebuilt 2.6.36-1 kernel from sources.... I get the same results

Comment 11 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-09 07:03:35 UTC
Please Help

One other thing that I can try is to fix the dsdt. However, when after gathering the dat disassembling it with iasl and then recompiling. I get ompilation complete. 201 Errors, 0 Warnings, 0 Remarks, 0 Optimizations.

All initial errors are attributed to objects not being found which makes some sense because I am forced to use the omnibook kmods from rpmforge to get bluetooth and various other functionalities working. However, I am unable to proceed with this. Please help me.

dsdt.dat file from problematic computer

Please find the dsdt.dat file produced from:

cat /proc/acpi/dsdt > dsdt.dat

data generated by acpidump and acpixtract

CORRECTION

I've since discovered that I've followed an old procedure for getting the relevant ACPI data. I have followed the newer procedure and install the acpi and pm utilities from the repo and generated the included dat files.

When I reassembled the DSDT (not included here) there were no errors generated.

Thank you for your attention to this matter

I have not been able to find out how to capture a kernel panic when the kernel panics at boot time

Please help

Thanks

Comment 15 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-10 13:56:29 UTC
I rebuilt 2.6.35-48 and enabled CONFIG_ACPI_PROC_EVENT=y

Same results

Comment 16 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-18 20:33:44 UTC
Ok.... I opened up a bug report at kernel.org which can be found at:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22632

With a little bit of coaching I found the kernel where the problem with my laptop first shows up. I built vanilla kernels 2.6.35.1 - 4. Upto 2.6.35.3 everything booted up normally. When I hit 2.6.35.4 the kernel panicked during the boot sequence.

Comment 17 Stanislaw Gruszka 2010-11-23 22:25:52 UTC
Do "git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.35.y.git" and check this version, it the problem is not fixed, bisect
as described in http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-bisect.html between v2.6.35.3 and v2.6.34.4 version. In a few steps you should find bad commit, then we will see what next.

Comment 18 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-24 05:12:30 UTC
OK Doing.... :) I will provide feedback as soon as I can

And thanks

Comment 19 Eli Wapniarski 2010-11-24 20:28:54 UTC
I hope that what I'm about to report will not make you guys too annoyed with me.

This whole diagnostic process finally led me to suspect something going on with one of the kmods that I required.

It turns out that not only are the omnibook kmods not required for my laptop anymore, they created a conflict. Once the omnibook drivers were removed everything booted up normally.

Thank you so very much for your time and coaching on diagnosing the issue.

Sincerely
