I just upgraded from f13 to f14. The kernel version of is 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64. When I boot the system, the computer hangs at: Setting up hostname. When I boot into 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64 everything seems to work just fine.
After watching the computer come up with the older kernel, I noticed that the next module to come up is LVM.... So the problem could be that the newer kernel is not loading the lvm module. Which means it could be initramfs problem. Of course I'm no developer so take what I just said with a couple of grains of salt, but.... it kinda makes sense given that nothing else happens. Thanks for your attention on this matter
Maybe to expedite.... This is the contents of my dmesg with the older kernel.... Of course.... I don't have one for the newer kernel Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset Initializing cgroup subsys cpu Linux version 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64 (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org) (gcc version 4.4.4 20100630 (Red Hat 4.4.4-10) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Tue Oct 19 04:06:30 UTC 2010 Command line: ro root=/dev/mapper/vg_orbskyl-lv_root rdblacklist=nouveau selinux=0 capability=0 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us vga=0x361 rhgb quiet nomodeset BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009c400 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009c400 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000dc000 - 00000000000e0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e4000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 00000000bf27c000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf27c000 - 00000000bf282000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf282000 - 00000000bf3ea000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf3ea000 - 00000000bf40f000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf40f000 - 00000000bf46f000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf46f000 - 00000000bf470000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf470000 - 00000000bf4f1000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf4f1000 - 00000000bf70f000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf70f000 - 00000000bf718000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf718000 - 00000000bf71f000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf71f000 - 00000000bf782000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf782000 - 00000000bf79f000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf79f000 - 00000000bf7cd000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf7cd000 - 00000000bf7ff000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf7ff000 - 00000000bf800000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000bf800000 - 00000000c0000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000e0000000 - 00000000f0000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000feaff000 - 00000000feb00000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec10000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed00000 - 00000000fed00400 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fed1c000 - 00000000fed90000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fee01000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ff000000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000100000000 - 0000000140000000 (usable) NX (Execute Disable) protection: active DMI present. e820 update range: 0000000000000000 - 0000000000001000 (usable) ==> (reserved) e820 remove range: 00000000000a0000 - 0000000000100000 (usable) No AGP bridge found last_pfn = 0x140000 max_arch_pfn = 0x400000000 MTRR default type: uncachable MTRR fixed ranges enabled: 00000-9FFFF write-back A0000-BFFFF uncachable C0000-CFFFF write-protect D0000-DBFFF uncachable DC000-FFFFF write-through MTRR variable ranges enabled: 0 disabled 1 base 000000000 mask F80000000 write-back 2 base 080000000 mask FC0000000 write-back 3 base 100000000 mask FC0000000 write-back 4 disabled 5 disabled 6 disabled 7 disabled x86 PAT enabled: cpu 0, old 0x7040600070406, new 0x7010600070106 e820 update range: 00000000c0000000 - 0000000100000000 (usable) ==> (reserved) last_pfn = 0xbf800 max_arch_pfn = 0x400000000 initial memory mapped : 0 - 20000000 found SMP MP-table at [ffff8800000f63d0] f63d0 init_memory_mapping: 0000000000000000-00000000bf800000 0000000000 - 00bf800000 page 2M kernel direct mapping tables up to bf800000 @ 8000-c000 init_memory_mapping: 0000000100000000-0000000140000000 0100000000 - 0140000000 page 2M kernel direct mapping tables up to 140000000 @ a000-10000 RAMDISK: 373a5000 - 37ff0000 ACPI: RSDP 00000000000f6300 00024 (v02 TOSQCI) ACPI: XSDT 00000000bf7eef66 0005C (v01 TOSQCI TOSQCI00 06040000 LTP 00000000) ACPI: FACP 00000000bf7cf000 000F4 (v03 INTEL CALPELLA 06040000 PTEC 00000001) ACPI: DSDT 00000000bf7d0000 0FBD0 (v02 TOSQCI CALPELLA 06040000 INTL 20060912) ACPI: FACS 00000000bf79bfc0 00040 ACPI: HPET 00000000bf7fed32 00038 (v01 INTEL CALPELLA 06040000 PTEC 00000001) ACPI: MCFG 00000000bf7fed6a 0003C (v01 INTEL CALPELLA 06040000 PTEC 00000001) ACPI: APIC 00000000bf7feda6 000BC (v01 PTLTD ? One last thing I can add... Is that I recreated the initramfs with dracut.... No joy.
K... I added acpi=off to the boot options and things seem to have come up just fine. I think that this should still be considered a bug, because I did not have to to do this with Fedora 13 kernels. Now I should have logs to be able to go through and as such I can provide any additional info that might be required. Thanks for looking into this.

Currently trying various acpi kernel parameters acpi=off -------- get the computer running but of course there is no power management acpi=noirq ---------- No joy acpi=rsdt --------- No Joy acpi=copy_dsdt -------------- Nope This kinda sucks.... cause the computer is a laptop and power management is a good thing. As mentioned previously..... I have had no trouble with F13 at all Thanks for your attention on this matter
Just updated the bios from version 2.30 to 2.80 No Joy
Tried running kernel 2.6.35.6-50. Again... same results. I guess I'm stuck with 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64 for the time being on an F14 system:(
As I final test..... I rebuilt 2.6.36-1 kernel from sources.... I get the same results
Please Help One other thing that I can try is to fix the dsdt. However, when after gathering the dat disassembling it with iasl and then recompiling. I get ompilation complete. 201 Errors, 0 Warnings, 0 Remarks, 0 Optimizations. All initial errors are attributed to objects not being found which makes some sense because I am forced to use the omnibook kmods from rpmforge to get bluetooth and various other functionalities working. However, I am unable to proceed with this. Please help me.
Created attachment 459004 [details] dsdt.dat file from problematic computer Please find the dsdt.dat file produced from: cat /proc/acpi/dsdt > dsdt.dat
Created attachment 459070 [details] data generated by acpidump and acpixtract CORRECTION I've since discovered that I've followed an old procedure for getting the relevant ACPI data. I have followed the newer procedure and install the acpi and pm utilities from the repo and generated the included dat files. When I reassembled the DSDT (not included here) there were no errors generated. Thank you for your attention to this matter
I have not been able to find out how to capture a kernel panic when the kernel panics at boot time Please help Thanks
I rebuilt 2.6.35-48 and enabled CONFIG_ACPI_PROC_EVENT=y Same results
Ok.... I opened up a bug report at kernel.org which can be found at: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22632 With a little bit of coaching I found the kernel where the problem with my laptop first shows up. I built vanilla kernels 2.6.35.1 - 4. Upto 2.6.35.3 everything booted up normally. When I hit 2.6.35.4 the kernel panicked during the boot sequence.
Do "git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.35.y.git" and check this version, it the problem is not fixed, bisect as described in http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-bisect.html between v2.6.35.3 and v2.6.34.4 version. In a few steps you should find bad commit, then we will see what next.
OK Doing.... :) I will provide feedback as soon as I can And thanks
I hope that what I'm about to report will not make you guys too annoyed with me. This whole diagnostic process finally led me to suspect something going on with one of the kmods that I required. It turns out that not only are the omnibook kmods not required for my laptop anymore, they created a conflict. Once the omnibook drivers were removed everything booted up normally. Thank you so very much for your time and coaching on diagnosing the issue. Sincerely
