Description cmeskell 1999-12-01 09:46:47 UTC
We have recently upgraded from Redhat 5.2 to Redhat 6.1 on two different machines.
In both cases under 5.2 , we had a HP Laserjet printer configured locally and
remotely. Both devices worked fine. After the upgrade, we have been unable to to print.
We have tried to reconfigure the printcap using printtool, but when we add a new printer,
we get the following message:

// begining  of message
Auto-detection found the following:

/dev/lp0 : not detected
/dev/lp1 : not detected
/dev/lp2 : not detected

You may disregard the message if you are setting up a serial printer.

This auto-detection may not always work on Sparc and Alpha architectures.

If no devices were detected, this could indicate a
hardware problem that justifies further investigation.
// end of message

In desperation, we have even tried to configure the printcap and filters manually, but with
no success.

add 'alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc' to /etc/conf.modules, and
things should be happy.
