I think that you are onto something with the mouse probe causing problems in 6.0. One of the first things the 6.1 installer does is probe for the mouse to determine whether a mouse can be used during the installation. I will check around here at the office, but I can about guarantee that this is the cause of the lockup that you are seeing.
