This bug does not occur if you shutdown the laptop from a terminal shutdown -h 0 Are you still seeing this with the 3.2.7 or newer kernel? If so, when you shutdown from a terminal is X still running or are you switching to the equivalent of runlevel 3 first? When you shutdown from the desktop, how are you doing that (from gnome-terminal, via menu options, etc)? What graphics hardware do you have?
