Description klaus scholl 2012-06-24 12:38:07 UTC
Description of problem: With Linux kernel 3.4 mobile broadband connection (UMTS) fails, whereas with the original Fedora 17 Linux kernel 3.3.4-5 it works perfectly.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible: Always with Linux kernels 3.4.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Fedora with kernel 3.4.2 or 3.4.3
2.Plug in USB-UMTS-Stick (Vodafone K4505-Z in Germany)
3.Switch on Mobile Broadband.

Actual results: Connection fails.

Expected results: Connection.

Additional info: Problem only with Linux kernels 3.4.0, 3.4.2 and 3.4.3, not with kernel 3.3.4-5 (Fedora Linux)

Comment 1 Josh Boyer 2012-07-05 15:31:01 UTC
Can you attach the full dmesg output for a failing boot and the output of lsusb?

Comment 2 klaus scholl 2012-07-06 10:36:06 UTC
Additional information to "Actual results":
After plugging in the USB-UMTS-Stick the control LED of the stick switches from red flashing to blue flashing. The network manager then shows "Mobile Broadband".
After switching on Mobile Broadband the stick keeps flashing blue, instead of steady blue. This means connection fails.
Presumably a synchronization error between UMTS-stick and Linux kernel.

Comment 3 Josh Boyer 2012-07-06 13:18:42 UTC
Still need the information asked for in comment #1.

You might also try the F17 kernel that is queued up to be in updates-testing:

Comment 5 klaus scholl 2012-07-07 14:43:49 UTC
Comparing the dmesg outputs with kernel 3.3.4-5 (Fedora 17 Linux, where everything is o.k.) and with kernel 3.4 (where connection fails) there is an interesting difference:

List nr 53.289387 up to 53.290826 in dmesg output kernel 3.4 (see above) "not on our whitelist - ignored"

In dmesg output kernel 3.3.4.-5 nothing like that.

The pin of the SIM-card as stored by the network manager is correct in both cases.
So the whitelist has nothing to do with the pin.

I hope this information will be useful to identify the bug.

Comment 6 Josh Boyer 2012-07-07 14:54:18 UTC
Please try the kernel I linked to in comment #3.

Comment 7 klaus scholl 2012-07-08 06:39:35 UTC
I tried kernel 3.4.4-5 - the same problem.
I suspect that the driver for the qualcomm chips used by Huawei and ZTE in their mobile broadband sticks has been removed in kernel 3.4.

The output of dmesg with kernel 3.4.4-5 (regarding the USB-UMTS-Stick - see lines from 88.009138] on) is practically the same as with kernel 3.4.3:

I'd like to draw the attention to the remarkable differences of the dmseg outputs with the the original Fedora 17 kernel 3.3.4-5 and the latest kernel 3.4.4-5:

Last lines of dmesg output with kernel 3.4.4-5 (latest kernel), where mobile broadband connection fails:

It should be noted that in both cases the mobile broadband stick is correctly identified. However, with the latest kernel (where connection fails) the Qualcomm chip of the ZTE-stick is expressively mentioned, whereas with the original Fedora 17 kernel (where everything is o.k.) there is absolutely no reference to it.

Obviously there the secret of the bug should be looked for.

I hope this information will be useful to identify and fix the bug.

I have a similar problem with kernel-3.4.4-4.fc16.x86_64. My internet key (Vodafone Mobile Broadband K4505-z, Italy) is not working anymore after recent updates.

Can anyone get ModemManager debug logs by following the steps given in
section "Debugging NetworkManager 0.8 and 0.9 3G connections" of the
following page?:
https://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/Debugging

Comment 11 klaus scholl 2012-07-17 11:46:33 UTC
Sorry, I am not a Linux specialist, but a simple user who likes Gnome 3 and Fedora for productive work. I do not fully understand the steps suggested on the page given in comment 10.
If you tell me what exactly I should type in the terminal, I will try to deliver the requested information.

Comment 12 Aleksander Morgado 2012-07-17 12:22:59 UTC
$> sudo service NetworkManager stop
$> sudo killall -TERM modem-manager
$> sudo /usr/sbin/modem-manager --debug

And in another terminal:
$> sudo NM_PPP_DEBUG=1 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon

Then you can reproduce the issue and attach the outputs of both processes (copy & paste the output logs into text files)

Hope it helps.

Comment 15 klaus scholl 2012-07-18 03:49:59 UTC
Thanks to Massimiliano. I don't think it's necessary to duplicate the output logs, since Massimaliano uses the same USB-UMTS-stick Vodafone K4505-Z.

However, an interesting new aspect of the problem: I tried a different USB-UMTS-stick (Vodafone K3765-HV) with kernel 3.4.4-5 - and it works!!!

The Vodafone K4505-Z is practically the same as the ZTE MF668; the only difference seems to be that the Vodafone version does not need USB-mode-switch, since (according to a well-known German computer magazine) the computer identifies it immediately as a modem and not as a mass-storage-device.

The mystery remains why with kernel 3.3 the Vodafone K4505-Z works and with kernel 3.4 not.

Comment 16 klaus scholl 2012-07-18 06:38:13 UTC
An addition regarding the USB-UMTS-stick ZTE MF668 (see comment 15):

I just had a look on this page:
https://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/MobileBroadband

The ZTE MF668, which - as a wrote in comment 15 - is nearly the same stick as the Vodafone K4505-Z (where broadband connection fails with kernel 3.4), is not mentioned in the list on this page.

Maybe an explanation for the dmesg output with kernel 3.4 "not on our whitelist - ignored" - see comment 5.

By the way, the ZTE MF668 is sold in Canada.

However, I can only reiterate: The mystery remains why with kernel 3.3 the Vodafone K4505-Z (virtually identical to the ZTE MF668) works and with kernel 3.4 not.

Comment 17 Aleksander Morgado 2012-07-18 06:39:21 UTC
This issue is due to kernel 3.4 coming with the qmi_wwan driver, which makes the modem export a wwan0 interface which ModemManager doesn't know how to use (yet).

So this bug should be considered as a duplicate of bug 835153. There's already a fix in ModemManager 0.5/0.6 branches for that; next release should fix it.

I am responsible for that, and adding that message was a bad choice. The message is harmless and expected and everything works just as it was meant to, wrt to the kernel and drivers. Which means that the message shouldn't have been there at all. It is just confusing debug output.

Just to make it clear: This message is in no way related to the ModemManager problem you experience.

More details if you want: the modem has a number of interfaces like serial, storage, netdev etc. The qmi_wwan driver only supports the netdev interface. But the current USB core API does not allow selecting just that one, so the driver is probed for a number of serial interfaces as well. To make this work, the driver probe function maintains a whitelist of interfaces it can support, and refuse those not matching the list. It must avoid binding to any of the serial interfaces, since they are supported by some other driver. That's where the message comes from.

FWIW, I hope to remove the message in 3.6 when the Linux USB core allows us to get rid of such interface number whitelists.

Comment 19 Massimiliano 2012-07-18 17:09:19 UTC
The following workaround works for me:
# echo "blacklist qmi_wwan" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-qmi_wwan.conf

Comment 20 klaus scholl 2012-07-20 05:45:05 UTC
Comment 17 was good news - thanks.

I just downloaded the latest kernel 3.4.5-2 - still the same problem.

By the way, it was really a good decision by the RedHat team that with downloading the third new kernel the original Fedora 17 kernel (3.3.) will not be removed. This is really an improvement. (In Fedora 16 the original kernel got lost.) So one can test any new kernel without losing the stable kernel of the Fedora release.

I hope that this kernel 3.4 bug will be fixed before releasing Fedora 18.

Comment 21 Aleksander Morgado 2012-07-20 08:35:12 UTC
The fix is not in the kernel, but in ModemManager; you should wait for a new MM update :-)

We'll mark it as a duplicate of 835153 for now. If for some reason the issue returns after using the new MM, please reopen.
