F18 Beta TC2 Live vs DVD packages diff

Description of problem:
When installing from DVD/netinst, important GNOME applications are not installed. I reported it first in bug 855310 comment 28, now I'm moving it into a separate bug.

I have made a diff between Live install and DVD install of F18 Beta TC2, the most important missing files from DVD install are:

evolution
gnome-boxes
gnome-games
rhythmbox
shotwell
simple-scan
sound-juicer
vinagre
vino

I think the reason is that if you open up package selection in Anaconda and select GNOME, all the "add-ons" are unchecked, even those that should probably be checked, like "Applications for the GNOME desktop", "LibreOffice" and "Multimedia support for GNOME".

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
F18 Beta TC2
anaconda 18.12

How reproducible:
always

This could be considered Beta blocker or least NTH on the grounds that we need community to test all applications properly before Final release. If we don't include them, most of the testers probably won't install them manually and therefore will not test them.

Comment 2 Chris Lumens 2012-10-09 14:19:00 UTC
anaconda's just following what's in comps here. gnome-apps, gnome-media, epiphany, and libreoffice are listed as options. If they ought to be installed for everyone, they should be listed as required groups, not as options. We're not going to second guess comps.

Comment 3 Adam Williamson 2012-10-11 17:34:55 UTC
Discussed at 2012-10-11 blocker review meeting: http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-qa/2012-10-11/f18beta-blocker-review-3.1.2012-10-11-16.04.log.txt . We are agreed that, while there may be questions over this topic of what the default package selection is and how sub-groups should be defined and presented, it's clearly not a blocker issue. It does not hit any of the Beta criteria. The criteria basically require a working desktop with a terminal and a web browser, and the current group certainly delivers that. So this is rejected as a blocker.

Comment 4 Kamil Páral 2012-10-11 17:35:41 UTC
Isn't there a way how to specify in comps that some groups are options, but they should be selected by default, with a possibility to unselect them? anaconda can then use this, packagekit (or some more advanced gui apps, like software-center) can use it, etc.

Comment 5 Kamil Páral 2012-10-11 17:39:03 UTC
I heard desktop team has some say about what should be included in a default GNOME installation. CCing Matthias.

Not currently. That would be a matter of code.

See http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2012-October/172188.html - we have enough issues with consistent use of metadata as-is.

That being said, there was a discussion on #fedora-desktop today about what to do here, and comps and spin-kickstarts has been adjusted - much of the contents of gnome-apps and gnome-media is now in the basic gnome group.

Comment 7 Kamil Páral 2013-01-10 14:50:01 UTC
Most of the applications are installed from F18 RC4 DVD. Closing.
