Description of problem: samba in RHEL5 did not have option to specify timeout. most guide on the internet will show how to hack the code to edit the timeout. the timeout is important in some condition, where the SMB server in Windows timeout (due to big file being scanned by antivirus). the timeout option will provide the opportunity to increase the timeout, thus resolving the issue. this issue dated back to 2003. see : http://osdir.com/ml/sysutils.backup.backuppc.general/2003-10/msg00067.html Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): smbclient in RHEL 5 How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. transfer file using smbclient from windows machine 2. when the file is quite large, antivirus scanning will usually makes the transfer time out 3. see info at : http://osdir.com/ml/sysutils.backup.backuppc.general/2003-10/msg00067.html Actual results: smb file transfer timeout after 20000 miliseconds Expected results: timeout is tunable Additional info: Info on timeout for backuppc: http://osdir.com/ml/sysutils.backup.backuppc.general/2003-10/msg00067.html Info on patches: http://anzwix.com/a/Samba/AddNewtimeoutCommandAndtOptionTo patches by Samba team: https://git.samba.org/?p=samba.git;a=commit;h=d9c88a56dc451be09e8c9fc9aa8857e312fcb444&utm_source=anzwix
RHEL5 contains two different version of samba. A samba-3.0 based one with the package prefix samba and a samba-3.6 based one with the package prefix samba3x. You filed this ticket against the older version. Is this intended or can the component be changed to samba3x?
The customer is currently using samba-3.0 and is not planning to upgrade to samba-3.6. Thus the patch should be going to samba-3.0 I also believe other people who are using samba-3.6 would appreciate the option in that version as well.

The option will not be ported to that version. Keeping in mind the state of RHEL5 support the customer should consider upgrading to later version(s) of RHEL or at least switch to using samba3x package instead of samba.
Understood. I will propose the customer to upgrade to samba-3.6, with the intention to get the timeout option. Appreciate if the timeout option could be applied to samba-3.6 soon.
Changing the component.
